Curious why you'd encourage starting there? I love that record but it's not even in the top 4 I'd recommend to start with. I'd start with Pawn Hearts or H to He if they are more avant/experimental oriented or Still Life and Godbluff otherwise, before I suggested World Record.

Not saying you are wrong, just never would have thought of it as a starting point for the band

I guess it's because if someone was more Avant oriented, then VDGG would already be their bread and butter? I tend to feel that most come in from the other side, ie Yes & Genesis, for which World Record has all the hallmarks of the VDGG style, while being slightly more mainstream...
