hey guys! Check out Sickoakes! This is off of their debut album but came out a couple years earlier on a Single or something. This caught me by surprise. Full song... about 15 mins streams here. Breathtaking.

Woah, breathtaking is right!!!
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

ill admit it, i skipped to the end but no-one on the first page mentioned ISIS. they're a very experimental band that owes alot to both prog metal and post rock. very interesting

I honestly haven't heard any ISIS.
or any of that other band( something with a P i think) that people consider post-metal.

Is it really worth trying?

Also, where is that quote from in your sig?

it's brilliant

Isis are definitely worth trying, if you don't mind some heaviness here and there. I have yet to try Pelican (which I assume is the other band you're thinking of), but they're certainly on my list now that I know Isis.

Post-metal is a genre worth checking out . There are some excellent bands that need to be heard. Isis is one of them. I only have Panopticon and I enjoy them from time to time. The other band, Pelican is more of my liking and they're basically Explosions in the Sky on steroids. They're instrumental as opposed to Isis.

There are TONS of other bands from the post-metal genre to check out:

Russian Circle - Enter
Callisto - Noir
Mouth of the Architect - Ties that Blind
Year of No Light - Nord
Cult of Luna - Salvation
Envy - Insomniac Dose
Tides - Resurface

My only complaint from the genre, or the bands that I know from it, is that they can sometimes sound too similar with one another, but aside from that there are some bands worth checking out.

^Cult of Luna are also on my list, and I will try to check out the other ones you mention. What do you think of Neurosis and Jesu btw? I've seen them mentioned as similair to Isis many times.

Well, it's actually the other way around for Neurosis as the other bands were influenced by them. Great droning and sludge metla band. I love their output and seem to be the only one to think that Souls At Zero is their best, so I will recommend going for later albums - Eye of Every storm, A Sun that Never Sets. and Times of grace.

Well, I still haven't listened to Neurosis (it's been siting on my wishlist for as long as I can remember... ) and I didn't really liked what I heard from Jesu (maybe I started with the wrong album), but there are a lot of people that enjoy them and I heard their new CD is worth checking out so I might do that.

Nice list BroSpence. Thumbs%20Up I noticed you also listed some math rock bands. I recently found a new band called "Maps and Atlases" and it's a nice math rock inspired band. I have their EP, "Tree, Swallows, Houses" and its pretty good. You might want to check them out. PM me if you're interested.Wink

Well, post-rock is definitely of the more cinematic genres of music. The swirling delay pedals of lost, angry guitars flow perfectly for Explosions in the Sky. The violins relay an ancient sadness inherent in mankind which carries on to its own future in Godspeed You! Black Emperor's music. Experimental oddities pour out of the minds in Mogwai and leave a person wondering, thinking, and hoping for more ideas.

This oft-wordless progressive genre leaves me oft-speechless!

Hear. Hear. Clap

I love this genre too! My only complaint is that the genre is flooded with copy cats, but if you look in the right spots it'll be pretty hard to get tired of it.

I think these thoughts would have spanded from their EP 'Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do', and their concert perforance with radiohead. I'm not sure if this is what you were talking about. But interesting neverless.

"Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do" is the newest EP from Sigur Ros. It is both a prelude to their new album, due later in 2004, and a soundtrack of sorts for Merce Cunningham’s dance, Split Sides. The project began last year when dance legend Cunningham recruited the Grammy-nominated Icelanders to create an interesting, yet simplistic score for his new production. Split Sides was performed as part of the Next Wave Festival at Brooklyn’s Academy of Music and again a few months later in Paris. For the performance, Sigur Ros (joined by Radiohead for one of the Brooklyn shows) performed three pieces to accompany the movement of the dancers on stage.

The improvised score is composed primarily from sonic odds and ends. The band used music boxes fed with sheet music, Fed Ex boxes, a glockenspiel, a percussive device made form stacked ballet shoes, and backing tapes of Cunningham speaking and tap dancing to create a pastiche of sonic density.

Some post-rock I absolutely love, some I could care less for. Do Make Say Think, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Tortoise are amazing, but Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Ros do nothing for me.

^^^^ From the ones you've mentioned I only heard of Zozobra and I didn't payed that much attention to them while listening to them so I might go back and listen to their album again.

BTW, "Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do" is a lovely EP. I love the sound they made in it. It sounds almost like Takk, but without the vocals and a bit more surreal.

Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do is worth getting if you like Sigur Ros.

Has This Will Destroy You been mentioned?
Recently my friend has been getting into post-rock. It's always great helping them out.
And he was interested in that album. Is it a good one?
