Apart from the elbowing the game wasn't any different from or more violent than any other football match really. The ref was very eager to send people off!

i agree with what you say but it is indeed a sad state of affairs.  FIFA's comments on the subject....

FIFA's Code of Conduct

2. Play Fair
Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly.
Cheating is easy, but brings no pleasure. Playing fair requires courage and character. It is also more satisfying.
Fair Play always has its reward, even when the game is lost. Playing fair earns you respect, while cheats are detested.
Remember: It's only a game. And games are pointless unless played fairly.

Well.............Ouch...........okay!................okay!...............I can handle that!

I can't believe this, people claiming the ref exaggerated? THE USA MAN COULD HAVE ENDED THAT GUY'S FOOTBALL CAREER! Angry They should be BANNED from the tournament!

We had a real bad case like this in the Dutch competitions. Some guy BROKE another guy's legs preventing him from playing football EVER again! He didn't only get suspended, he got tried for aggravated assault.
Epic.

Well I did not watched the entire game (personal occupations interfered),but the Italy red card was justified, while (the first two) reds for USA were not really. And overall, the referee over-dominated the game.I repeat,I watched till the 50th minute, and it seemed a very ugly game, because of the ref...

Players like De Rossi and Gattuso and many others are football sociopaths, only focussed on winning, they do everything (spitting, elbowing, kicking on heels from behind, provoking, intimidating), the referee is the one who has to show the frontiers but often these referees fail to do this. And I am often flabbergasted how upset these sociopaths can act when the referees whistle or show a card while they have committed obvious fouls, incredible, we need a FOOTBALL PRISON FOR THESE FOOTBALL SOCIOPATHS Angry !

Before the USA v ITALY game the English commentators were remarking on how closely linked these countries are historically and many blood ties that exist, then when they started playing all hell broke loose - there's no argument like a big family bust-up!!!Shocked

Interesting how differently we all saw the USA-Italy game........good thing we're none of us referees, I guess LOL

It's also fun to compare the last 2 or 3 World Cups with footage of some of the tournaments from the 70s & 80s, before FIFA began clamping down on the tackle from behind & foul play in general. Most of todays games look like kindergarten tea parties in comparison.........remember in 1994 (I think), Brazil's Leonardo was also dismissed for elbowing a US player - rather more viciously & blatantly than De Rossi even........

Well, I thought the Aussies were more than a bit unlucky against Brazil.......I'm not one to be paranoid enough to believe in crooked referees.........but Herr Merck did give all the 50/50s in favour of Brazil, and many of the 25/75s too.........at least they gave the Aussies a bit of a chance by starting with Sausage Rollando.........instead of a real footballer      LOL

hahahha....several thoughts on the game from micky's couch...

first... thank god the U.S. isn't playing today... enjoying a warm Guinness stout..

second.... watching the games on a spanish channel here in the U.S. (univision I believe)... OH MY GOD... no wonder the damn Brazians are so good.. after the game the telecast flipped to some studio where the finest looking women...wearing tight Brazian shirts with short...repeat SHORT shorts were dancing with the correspondent... who might have been the luckiest guy on the earth at the moment.. there was this....women in a lime green outfit that well...to put it politely...hid nothing in the chest.  With inspiration like that....Brazil is a shoe in to win...

third.... as a part-time (big event) football fan only.  All I can say is WOW... I know people are going to come on and say that Brazil looked like sh*t or something...but from a part time fan...the display of ball skills was amazing and so much fun to watch.  What a team....  The Aussies... a game effort...against anyone else...maybe a win....

No offence to the Americans, but Ghana are going to smash USA I think. They were really impressive against the Czechs, who are a great side.

Not having really seen Brazil play recently until today...I wasn't sure if that was a good/great game from them.. but I loved seeing the ball skills on display....I coach my daughters team and love seeing the best on display.  We had an English 'football' camp (Challenger if you are familiar with it) here in town this last week that I took my kids to.  Great coaches, perfect gentleman and fun to talk to. A  shout out to Robin from Scotland who not only took a liking to my daughter.. but was a coach to me as well.

unfortunately not my friend... but I have some mental pictures I'll beam you over that should stay with me until....(where's my wife)....umm..this evening ahhahah Wink

This sucks, because it might be the last game of some name called Zinedine Zidane's career, because of suspension.
