Paul, I think that Camel should place ( checks previous posts) 9th in this poll if that is any consolation. May listen to Snow Goose or Mirage later.

Hey hey, quit that nonsense! More Henry Cow votes needed!

Sounds like sour milk. Paul's Henry Cow comment is udder trash. The cream rises to the top, more Cow votes indeed!

Logan,

I see what you did there. Anyway, if Henry Cow is the answer..... I'm sorry what was the question?

Erm...

Question: What do you get when you cross a Henry and a Cow?
Answer: A Henry Cow.

Camel still have a big mountain to climb make it into the Top 10, being over 100 points behind Marillion in 10th place, but at least they're not in Freefall - at least For Today anyway.  Wink

Huh? I thought this was a progressive music discussion. Henry Cow are the avatar of progressivism in my book. Nothing against Hawkwind, they are a fine psych band buy they are musical toddlers compared to the mighty Henry Cow.

Frankly, ridiculous.

I’m not familiar with Henry Cow. What album of theirs would you say was their best?

I don't think it has a best, all of the albums have their own merits. To some the earliest Canterburyesque, jazzy sound would work, for another the RIO/Avant Prog of the last. To many it would be Western Culture (1979). Despite loving RIO and chamber Prog, that took considerable time for me to love. Now I love Western Culture. From what I know of your tastes, I might most recommend In Praise of Learning (1975) and the Slapp Happy/ Henry Cow collaboration Desperate Straights as potentially fairly palatable. But I don't think this band would be much to your tastes.

This is the first thing I ever heard of Henry Cow, on university radio back in the late 80s (War).

For my most current of tastes, if I were to choose an album right at this moment by Henry Cow, it would be Unrest, the debut or Western Culture.

I love this, Teenbeat, but I would not expect it to fit the tastes of most mainstream-ish melodic rock or metal music, or alt. prog, listeners:

I think I would choose Unrest too, followed by Western Culture. Frith composed the song "Ruins" using the Fibonacci sequence. I've always wondered if that song was an influence for Tatsuya Yoshida's Ruins band or if the name was just a coincidence.

Some important bands that didn't make the list (imo): Pendragon, PFM, Anglagard, Gong, Focus, Nektar, Kansas, Strawbs, The Flower Kings, Ozric Tentacles, Banco, Eloy, Ange, Amon Duul II and the Moody Blues (just to name a few). I understand you can't have everyone (and this is the opinion of the members of P.A.) but it still surprises me that some of the bands on this top 21 are on here when some of the ones I mentioned didn't make it.

Kansas have blown away like Dust in the Wind and many of those other bands you mentioned still have a long way to go to make it into the Top 20. For instance:-

PFM  (45 points)
Pendragon  (44 points)
Caravan  (44 points)
Gong  (43 points)
The Flower Kings  (42 points)
Eloy  (38 points)
Focus  (35 points)
Strawbs  (25 points)
Nektar  (0 points) Ouch

Oh well Paul. I'm just saying that if a newbie were to look at this list he shouldn't neglect most (if not all) of the bands I mentioned. ;)

With this kind of threads, the most famous and popular bands end up in the lists. Smile
Top 10 is quite predictable. Smile

No Dream Theater nor Tool surprises me as well, although they aren't in my top 20 either LOL
(Opeth definitely is though)

I didn't predict that Marillion would end up 100 points ahead of Camel. Tongue
