Sorry it took so long to post, fates conspiring and all that.
Well, after two listens I have to say I'm impressed. I'd tried to not expect too much and I think that was the best bet. Of the shorter tracks I like Pandemonium best - great song. For The Love of Gold hasn't moved me that much yet (unlike the majority) nice synth motif from Tomas though. However, the real ace in the hole has got to be Numbers, which made an instant impression on me. Wow. On first spin it's just that lovely feeling, pure bliss, the boys are back and this sounds great. On second spin I was shocked at how much of it I remembered from the first listen. The main theme is stuck in my head as I speak. And as for Roine's solo about the 11-12 min mark, breathtakingly brilliant
![]() 54 minutes long and easily their shortest main disc from any album. It seems to work though. Perhaps the shorter running time aids digestion, just like Gaviscon Cool.
As for the bonus disc, Illuminati is a nice Blade of Cain-esque (bible again Barney
![]() Overall, Roine's playing is sublime, the vocals are great and the production hits the spot too. Whilst I know I'll have to hear it a few more times to decide roughly where BoE will sit in the TFK pantheon, initial impressions are very positive.
Finally, kudos to Anthony and Jeff for their reviews

I wasn't impressed with Roine's guitar playing, it wasn't bad or anything. I was hoping for more unique playing - guess that is what I get for being a massive TMV fan and having Omar top my Best Guitarist Lists.

Now that you mention it, that does make a lot of sense. I saw Clapton live (with a buddy's family who I tagged along with) and it was really impressive. About halfway through the show, he did an acoustic set and did this unbelievable acoustic solo. Also, Roger Daltrey was the opening act with Townshend's brother on guitar. Great show. |

man, i'm not even going to read all the 'new' TFK threads and posts. just wanted to pop in and say i got BoE yesterday. Numbers is a subtle masterpiece. it is so exciting to have a new album from these dudes. also love the bodin and roine helped write some stuff. even though it is mastered kind of loud, the production is warm and very listenable. all are in good, mature form. oh, and our new drummer is very exciting. he's tight.

Hey guys! Long been a massive fan of this thread (well, of the Flower Kings band itself in general lol
![]() http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201226.php The main page also has a link to an interview with Roine, haven't read it yet myself, but now I have something to do during my dinner break at work! Oh, and a totally random note, how freaking mind-blowingingly awesome is Bodin's keyboard solo at about the 24:55 mark on `The Truth Will Set You Free' from `Unfold The Future' ?! ![]() |

Anyway, I'm reet excited at the moment - what with the Higgs Boson discovery an all, I am working late tonight (software release), when I get home I shall listen to CD 2 of BOE....see if a second spin will titillate me more than the first spin...

I thought you would have known Roine's style by now. He's not a wild player, or plays 'wrong' notes like Omar, but Roine improvises almost all of his solos. He's got all the rock tricks, plus his own bag of tricks, without ever diving into metal-styled playing. I thought his playing on BoE was some of his liveliest playing in some time (in regards to TFK). |

My favorite guitar moment on the new album is in Numbers. I don't recall the time frame, but it's kind of towards the end, with the BIG chord comes in on the second beat every time, the drums accent the cut off, and Roine is just wailing away. I get chills every time that part comes up. It's followed by, "And then the Numbers....."
You guys know what section I'm talking about? |

I'm, not too big on Bodin's solos (some feature that whole crazy-sounding whirlwind of synth noises), but I love that solo from TTWSYF. His playing on that album is the best out of all TFK albums. I'm just disappointed that you can't hear his crazy organ playing better on the Devil's Playground during the really fast rockin section.

I am with you on that one one hundred percent Darkshade. That section is absolutely brilliant, I wish they extended that part out for a bit longer, but yeah, that's one of the goosebump moments that bumps an album up a rating. I don't think the Zappa-esque run at the end of the section quite does it justice, but that part in its own right is wonderful.

Yea, i knew he didn't have any astonishing characteristics to set him apart, but i was still hoping for a great guitar solo or a trace of an interesting tone manipulation. But honestly, i won't say i paid too much attention to him during my listens it was more a "background" conclusion. I'll give Numbers, Going Up, and Those Who.., a closer listen to see if any guitar parts captivate me.

Numbers had some of the best guitar parts.
You begin to realize Roine definitely has his own style going on once you hear a few albums he's on, especially if it's TFK or Transatlantic. Sure, he's influenced by Gilmour, Fripp, Zappa, Hackett, and Howe, but it's all in his phrasing that makes it Stolt's own. |

Roine's style is definitely unique. I don't really see how someone couldn't enjoy his playing. Boggles my mind, really. Different strokes for different folks?
Go to the 5:20 mark. In no way is that solo generic. |

I'm in the middle of listening to something else, but if that's the solo I'm thinking it is, then yea, that is one of the best. I also love his solo from The Sum of No Reason, near the end of the song. That whole album is magical.
