Well said Gus.  I couldn't have said it better myself man.

I've just finished mowing a lawn for 2 hours (in Florida during the summer....) while listening to BoE. I'm now sure that i consider it 4*, being the only exposure to TFK that i've been able to get through. It's a great album, but it has it flaws for me.

Roine's voice isn't fantastic and should take a break from singing, the actual vocalist is great.
While it's not a big problem on the album, but some differentiation in atmosphere or musical execution would be great - ambient withdraws, jazz breakdowns, etc - while i'm not sure if any of these examples are appropriate for the album,  i hope i made my point.

The deluxe edition, for me, is a must for anyone that can afford it. Going Up and Fireghosts being in my top 5 songs.

How does everyone feel about this? I personally think we should, politely, petition that Sean Trane edit (or delete) his reviews for The Flower Kings albums he's reviewed. Going by the rules on PA, if those reviews came out now, they'd be reported and deleted. I like Sean Trane, and his reviews are usually good, but a lot of good points were made at the other forums.
Agreed.

I've read back through the posts when we were talking about this 3 years ago and it still annoys me.

It's extremely easy to dismiss any prog album on one listen when you've already decided you don't like a band and he just repeated this time and time again.

Yeah, Hughes's TFK reviews have always irked me terribly. Most of his objections are nonsensical justifications for his own subjective distaste. Which is sad, becuase I like most of the stuff he posts.

Yeah, they've always irked me as well, but I'm not going to tell the people who do all the work on this site how to run it.  If they don't want to remove them, then that's how it is.  Hopefully, when they have time, they will take a look and ask him to rewrite them or delete them.  However, I think his opinion is just as valid as anyones here, as long as he explains it better, which I think he is fully capable of doing, based on his other reviews (most of which I agree with, for the most part).
I find that I have to agree with you guys on this discussion, and I must say that his reviews had a larger impact on me in regards to the value of his reviews over the impact of my feelings about the Flower Kings.  He is one of the most prolific reviewers on the site, and yet I have no interest in reading any of his reviews, as I basically threw him into the category of site members whose tastes conflict with mine and therefore don't really provide any value to me.  (In his defense, apparently he wrote a number of these reviews during the site's infancy and was seemedly after quantity over quality.  It is my understanding that he did go back and re-write a number of his earliest reviews, although apparently not the Flower King ones).  This being said, I think that the Flower Kings are a victim of this site's diversity of its definition of prog and the diversity of its fans that fall under the prog umbrella, which is both one of its largest strengths, but can also be one of its biggest weaknesses.  I suspect that there is no reason to go into further detail about what I mean by that, but I can follow up with another post if I have left anyone hanging.  LOL

I've always felt Roine's voice was an acquired taste.  I think he sounds good on the album, though I think he is not quite as good as he used to be.  Though in an odd way, I think he is also better, because he doesn't try to sing beyond his limits, which he used to do on the early albums (though I kind of enjoyed that too, actually).

Oddly, the two songs you list as top 5 are my least favorite on the whole album, but I need to give more listens before I say that for certain.

Roine certainly did test his range more on the earlier TFK albums, but I always thought it sounded great. I love his vocals.

"Big Puzzle" probably shows the widest range of vocals he's ever done.

I think that Stolte's distinctive Swedish drawl on his English pronunciation is what makes his vocals "Interesting". Roj hasn't reported in on the new CD, probably loving it too much to take the head-phones off and log onto his computer.
I've had a Dream Theater session tonight with SDOIT and ITPOE being played as I felt in the mood...
The Mrs has just started reading that "50 Shades of Grey" book that every woman in the whole western world seems to be raving about - I gave a quick speed reading to see if the sex was as filthy as every-one was saying it was.....Hm , the maim male protagonist is a billionaire, young, devastatingly good looking and hung like a stallion....are women that shallow??? However he plays the piano Rachmaninov apparently....... If the Mrs wants me to tie her up and spank her I suppose I'll have to oblige...but that won't do much for me.....Oh and back to the Flokis, I don't think that this latest Epic will better the definitive top epics and we all know what those are......

Yeah, there are thousands of towels blowing across the states these days, like large, aimless terry cloth tumble weeds, cause no one can find the clothespins to hang them up.

Or what about a single epic song that takes the whole CD up, it could be called The Whirlwind (of lost clothes).

Aye - but if Stolte was to take up the theme I'm sure he'd have to mention "Magdelenes Panties" or perhaps Cain's combinations.......maybe even Jesus' jockstrap! Tongue
