Now now Heavyfreight! I never plan on going back to Micro$oft Internet Explorer. It seems Mozilla are still updating 1.5 as well as 2.0, so I'm happy for now. Hopefully they'll sort out the issue with 2.0 soon.

I'm running Firefox 1.5.0.3 on Linux and I'm happy with it. Plus, the 2.0 has not yet been included in my upgrades repository, so I'd have to actively work to install it anyway (for which I have neither the time nor the inclination). Geck0, are you running Windows? |

Windows 2000 SP4
XP has caused so many problems on my mother's computer and I don't like all the features, so I'm sticking to 2000 for now. Firefox 2.0 worked, but the tabs didn't work how I wanted them and there was an issue with the URL Bar that annoyed me too. Tabs: I open a new tab, go to a site and it opens the page in my current tab, not the new one... very annoying! Also, it doesn't let me close tabs for some odd reason URL Bar: I cannot scroll down the list of websites on the arrow keys or use the page up/page down keys with it either. It's apparently designed for a 3-button mouse, which I do not use. I managed to find the install file for 1.5* and now I'm happy again. Plus they seem to still be updating 1.5*, as I had an update for it a few days ago, much to my surprise! Edited by Geck0 - November 16 2006 at 13:42 |

I'm surprised your running Win2k given your apparent disdain for Microsoft. What's holding you back from making a switch? (There's usually always that one critical piece of software that only runs on Windoze )

Well, firstly, I play too many computer games that require Windows (although there are Linux versions of some of them around, but I don't really want to re-purchase them).
I could maybe in the future make a dual boot, but I've heard problems with such things and I don't know how much time and patience I have to actually get Linux and x-windows working. For browsing on the Internet, Linux is fine. I have a lot of Microsoft-based software though that I can't do much about. As you're a Linux user yourself, how severe is the portability issue with Windows software? Bearing in mind I don't just play games (I have a lot of different software for different things). |

For basic operation (web, e-mail, office suite, etc.) Linux works wonderfully. For gaming you can check out Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com), but I believe that's not free. I would say if you have "a lot of different software for different things", you would have to see if there's a Linux counterpart, which doesn't always exist. Things like VMWare can be used to create a Windows environment within a Linux host, but that's an expensive solution. Easiest thing is to do what you're doing and stick with Win but avoid IE!
Re: dual boot: it's not that bad to setup if you install the Linux bootloader on your MBR and use it to either boot into your Linux distro or Win2k. There are Linux distros such as Ubuntu which are very user friendly and have virtually everything work "out of the box". |

My wife has just told me she wants a divorce. She came into the bathroom and found me having sex with a dolphin.
I don't care..there are plenty more fish in the sea.

That's the spirit, a good old fashioned RANT! How about lorry drivers who wait for a long slow hill on a motorway before attempting to overtake the equally slow driving lorry in fron, just because they think they can go 0.005 mph faster, thus effectively blocking two lanes of the bloody road for miles, as they sloooooowwwwly overtake the one in front, whilst behind them, the motorway fills up with irate motorists who are capable of driving at speeds in excess of 20 mph, all now frantically trying to get into the outside lane to overtake the 'elephant race' leading to poor decision making, driving too fast, driving too close, crashes, blocked motorways and me getting delayed YET AGAIN! |

exactly right about lorry drivers, especially on the M5 ! I don't know if there are any on this site, but one told me once they believe they have priority over all other traffic, as our main highways such as Watling Street (A5) were originally laid down by the Romans "for the movement of goods and legions".
I have heard the M5 is the most dangerous motorway in the UK regarding crashes, and the M6 in wintertime! A friend of mine and his family had his car almost "flipped over" by a foreign LHD lorry on the M5 because of a "blind spot" in the cab.
Should lorries be restricted to 60mph in Lane 1 only??

As a holder of a class one HGV licence I feel that I should say something in the defence of lorry drivers; although there are some idiots out there. One of the biggest problem with this side by side stuff is that all modern lorries are now restricted to 56mph. This means that I lightly loaded lorry cannot pass a full one on the flat but as the loaded one climbs a hill it slows down, causing the empty one to pull out to overtake. Then when you get a downhill bit the empty one is slower thatn the full one because of the gravity assistance. Therefore they keep having to pass each other which causes delays. It's ok saying that they should stay in line and travel at the speed of the slowest one but try explaining that to the transport manager or to a driver who has a schedule to meet. In all honesty an awful lot of this should be on the railways.
