I've been into Zappa since 2006, and I'm still discovering new things. Admittedly I wasn't listening much between 2009 and 2012, but I've been obsessed since last November, and never thought it would last this long (7 months so far), I keep buying new albums I don't have yet, when I think I'm good, I need more, and there's more albums planned for release in 2013.

It WILL never end...
My first experience with Zappa was via The Mothers in 1968.....this girl who sat next to me in English class was a fan and turned me onto them. Over the years I have remained a fan but never really got into all the posthumous releases.
btw are you a Beefheart fan..... have found that many Zappa fans seem to like the Captain also.

I don't have any Beefheart albums at the moment, though I like anything with him in Zappa's catalog. I've heard random songs over the years, and they're interesting, I just haven't taken the time to explore his music.

The Captain has a PA page here...ck him out.
Clear Spot is my favorite lp by him...it's one of the more accessible lp's.

Listening to a soundboard '73 show with Jean-Luc Ponty and Sal Marquez, and I really hope the ZFT comes out with an album featuring this lineup soon. I mean, if Philly 76 could be released, why not one from the famous "lost' FZ band? It's like Roxy but even more jazz-fusion.
That, and then Roxy By Proxy and Dance Me This, and you've got so many 'holes' in Zappa's discography filled.

It's from the Piquantique period, but that era is after the Petite Wazoo, before the Roxy lineup with Napoleon Murphy Brock. I have soundboard shows from that band, and they sound great, it's Frank Zappa doing classic 70s fusion, with a very small percentage of songs with vocals. An early and very different version of 50/50 is all kinds of funky goodness, and the aforementioned "Indespensible" Sal Marquez sings an early 'cocktail lounge' version of Inca Roads. And Jean-Luc Ponty all over the music, unbelievable. I can't believe this band hasn't been given any kind of official release, besides the couple of nuggets from The Lost episodes.

It's coming back to me now. I think I once talked to somebody who went to one of those shows. He described it to me and I wasn't even aware that lineup/repertoire ever existed. I agree, we need an official release there. Sounds like some good live recordings exist.

They're great performances. Dupree's Paradise is like a whole different song. I recommend 1973/06/25 Sydney, Australia, and 1973/08/21 Stockholm, Sweden (the show most of Piquantique comes from)

Ice Cream For Crow or Doc At The Radar Station are good starting points for someone coming in to Beefheart by way of Zappa.
