Well this is my list:

1) NUOVA ERA (best record: Il Passo del Soldato, 1995).

2) LA MASCHERA DI CERA (best record: LuxAde, 2006).

3) CONSORZIO ACQUA POTABILE (CAP) (best record: Robin delle Stelle, 1998 - great Banco's influence).

4) IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA (best record: Discesa agl'Inferi d'un Giovane Amante, 2009)

5) LA TORRE DELL'ALCHIMISTA (best record: Neo, 2007).

P.S.: five is too small number...

I agree almost completely with Andrea, although I would have to include in the top six IL CASTELLO DI ATLANTE (I almost excluded them because they've been around since the 1970s, but their major recorded output wasn't until the 90s and 00s).  But those five bands would be right up there for me, too.

I also have to give a nod to the following bands who have released one outstanding album so far, and to hoping there's more from them:
1 - IL TEMPIO DELLE CLESSIDRE
2 - PHAEDRA
3 - LAGARTIJA
4 - PANDORA
5 - ARCHITRAVE INDIPENDENTE
6 - IL BABAU & I MALEDITTI CRETINI
7 - IL RUSCELLO
8 - PLURIMA MUNDI
9 - RANESTRANE
10 - ALTARE THOTEMICO
11 - SENZA NOME

Here's some excellent non-RPI Italian bands:
1 - DEUS EX MACHINA
2 - DFA
3 - FONDERIA
4 - NODO GORDIANO
5 - GARAMOND
6 - YUGEN
7 - CALOMITO
8 - ZAAL

And I have to give special attention to the symphonic bands who were in at the beginning of rebirth in the 90s:
1 - MALIBRAN
2 - GERMINALE
3 - MAD CRAYON
4 - DIVAE
5 - MONTEFELTRO

So much incredible music!  And so many other bands not even mentioned that are worthy as well!  The modern RPI scene is indeed alive and well, as robust as prog from anywhere.

Yes, I saw that, Chris.

Fortunately I bought my copy of Robin delle Stelle in a local (important prog) store in my town for 12 euros...

This is what I found on youtube... wonderful track!!!! SOLI SULL'OLIMPO (that's the reason of my top 5 list...).

Torodd, for today, and it can change often.....these would be 5 faves...of bands born since 1990.
I tend to prefer the 00s bands much more than 90s bands, generally.

- IBDMedusa
- LAGARTIJA
- ARCHITRAVE INDIPENDENTE
- IL BABAU & I MALEDITTI CRETINI
- ALTARE THOTEMICO

Todd and James:

I see you both left out any of the many Zuffanti's projects.

What do you like more off the Zuffanti's long list? I think Hostsonaten, am I right?

Todd: I also have that Pandora's Dramma per un Poeta Ubriaco... but to be honest, I never found the time to listen to it with attention... don't know why...  maybe a presage, isn' it?

Amanita L'Oblio is a great non-RPI album.

Andrea, like you I think La Maschera di Cera is in my top five. It is by far my favorite of Zuffanti's projects, although I really like Finisterre, Rohmer and Zaal. I also enjoy Aries and Hostsonaten. But I wouldn't put any but La Maschera in my top five.

Chris, I'll have to check that one out. By the way, which CAP album are you looking for?

Yeah, agree with you guys that La Maschera is top five for sure, LuxAde assured that for me (as well as their wonderful Nearfest performance and hanging out afterwords with the flute/sax player Big smile)

One of my guilty pleasures from the early 90's is Asgard.  A symphonic band (listed here as Neo-prog, but I think symphonic is far more accurate) from Italy, that moved to Germany for a while and recorded most of their albums there.  Lyrics in English, but the first Italian band I'd ever heard (back in 1998 or so).  Anyway, I probably wouldn't put them in the top 5 but I've always loved their music, particularly their vocalist.  Would have loved to hear him sing in Italian, as he had such a wonderful voice.

Andrea, Zuffanti's stuff is all of high quality and i don't dislike it, but, none of it cracks my RPI favorites list.  "In Limine" would be my favorite.  Much of it though is just too smooth for my taste.  I like a rougher ride.

I've only heard their "Akarna" album, which I enjoy quite a bit.  Another great neo type album from the 90s is Aufklarung's "De La Tempesta... L'Oscuro Piacere."  Great Italian take on Twelfth Night style.

^ Yeah, love that album as well, and it features the vocalist of Asgard (I believe it is his last recorded work).

Arkana is their best album for sure, though Esoteric poem is an excellent 36 minute suite as well (though rather short for an album, especially one I had to pay $20 to get back in the late 90's......the whole album is the one song).

^ In my mind Chicco Grosso is the Italian answer to Geoffrey Mann, a vocalist whom I admire a great deal.

So after "Arkana" you would recommend "Esoteric Poem"?  Any others?

^ Clap  Two of the extremes of RPI, to be sure!  The wild and the refined--if anyone didn't know, all they would have to do was look at the covers to figure which is which!  Both outstanding albums-- Enjoy!

Yep, two fantastic choices Anaon. Thumbs Up

Todd, the CAP cd that I'm really after is Nei Gorghy... but I'll get round to them all at some point. You know how it is, there's just so much great stuff out there.

Nice idea with the top 5 thing, torodd. Enjoyed the review of the Arti e Mestieri live album, btw.

Been having a think about my top 5 favourite RPI bands of the last 20 years and it's not an easy decision as there's quite a few i rate very highly such as Pandora, Il Bacio Della Medusa, La Torre Del Alchimista, La Maschera di Cera, Ubi Maior, Altare Thotemico, Three Monks, Filoritmia, Nuova Era and most recently Il Tempio Delle Clessidre to name a few.

After much thought here's the top 5 in no particular order.......

Il Bacio Della Medusa
La Maschera Di Cera
Pandora
Ubi Maior
Il Tempio Delle Clessidre  - a very recent one I know but their album is as good as anything I've heard from the Italian scene from a new band since the seventies.

^ Great list, Paul!  If hard pressed to combine my two lists (top six and the single album list), I'd probably have Il Tempio delle Clessidre in the top five as well.  What a great debut!

Thanks Todd, yeah it is a great album and certain to make my top albums of the year list. Problem about picking that RPI top 5 is it might look totally different if i did it tommorow. Wink
