I highly recommend After Crying's "Megalázottak és megszomorítottak." In fact, almost anything by them is worthwhile in the genre you are looking for. This Hungarian band is made up mostly of musicians who actually play with symphony and other orchestras in Hungary. They are superbly accomplished musicians (particularly the cellist and trumpet player - though the violinist and pianist are also excellent.) Most of their music is instrumental, though they sometimes add very tasteful, mostly quiet vocals (in Hungarian, of course...).

In fact, I would recommend the Megalazottak album to any prog fan here who has not heard this band yet. They deserve far more attention than they have ever gotten.

Great lists everyone!Smile Some of these I am familiar with and some of those I don't consider all that mellow. I can understand Camel or even Pink Floyd but Caravan's "in the land of grey and pink?!!!! Have you listened to "nine feet underground" lately? Not very mellow in my opinion although it is a great album.  Also, surprised no one has mentioned Anthony Phillips and also come to think of it some Steve Hackett.

I was kind of expecting more post rock stuff so if anyone can recommend stuff that falls into that genre I would appreciate it. I know there were a few mentioned. Speaking of which I am surprised to not see any mention of Sigur Ros or Godspeed you black emperor. Keep the lists coming! Smile

I would add Moody Blues and Renaissance......about as mellow as it gets.
Yak is very nice also.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Try anything by Iona.  Folksy-Celtic-New Age type stuff combined with prog rock.  They're one of the greatest bands in the world, but barely get any attention.  Much of their music is very mellow, soothing, and uplifting.

I found a lot of Porcupine Tree's LIGHT BULB SUN to be very mellow and sedative at times.

Pearls Before Swine – The Use of Ashes already came up, and I would also heartily recommend These Things Too (still my favorite of theirs).
John G. Perry – Sunset Wading. His first solo album, headphones especially recommended.
Jade Warrior – Waves. Same as above.
The Long Hello – The Long Hello
Kayak – any of them, esp. Phantom of the Night, See See the Sun, Royal Bed Bouncer.

^ Just listen to it, especially the last five minutes. If the last five or six minutes is mellow to you then you don't know what mellow is. Smile

This reminds me of something I need to mention. I am looking for albums that are mellow the entire way through(not just one or two songs).

Some lovely, yet soft acoustic guitar parts on it indeed! But, I Dont think its a mellow album.

Mellow is my bag, especially lately and as one grows more mature, the sheen becomes even brighter with the “soft “stuff.

My friend Colin Mold has two prog-folk classics, especially the stellar “A Girl on the Castle Steps”, a revealing voice and instrumentalist extraordinaire.

Colin Edwin- Jon Durant – Burnt Belief is a stunner, a recording that sounds like nothing else out there beyond the stars instrumentals that will knock you sideways

Gian Castello- both “Taliesin” and “I segni Segreti” are medieval dreamscapes of the very highest order , musicianship at the service of melody. Super seductive!

Fauns from Berlin are prog-folk troubadours as well as fellow Germans Frequency Drift .

Dave Minasian has a unique gem with “Random Acts of Beauty”, sensational melodies and brilliant playing all around, including an Andy Latimer foray that is one of his finest! Symphonic, euphoric and satisfying.

Shine Dion from Norway had 2 killer albums, “Killandra” and “Wyn”, both glacial versions of Gian Castello , with the sublime voice of Janne Hansen will settle your tired mind and let you drift.

Sunscape has a self-titled album and nothing more But what a masterpiece! Dreamy, suave, oppressive in a good way.

Anathema is very relaxing but in a powerful way, as both “We Are Here Because We are Here” and “Weather Systems” are superb examples of adrenalin reflux with a little testosterone to boot.

Vienna Circle has 2 releases as well, the amazing debut White Clouds and Silhouette Moon are dependable voyages into the languid beauty, in a perhaps poppier way but with melodies this good, you can’t go wrong.

The 3 Trion albums are little mellotron-infested jewels that glitter nicely with fellow Dutchmen Odyssice , also owners of a trio of discs , both guitar extravaganzas as well, so its stunning.

Yak has an album called “The Journey of the Yak” and well, simply marvelous.  

The first two Lunatic Soul albums are splendid escapist moodscapes, very sad and melancholic.

Oldfield- “Voyager” or “Light + Shade” are tremendous discs

Anthony Phillips “The Geese and the Ghost” or “Slowdance”

Nine Stones Close-“Traces” and “One Eye on the Sunrise”

For now but I have many more  , I will keep you posted
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Been sampling Big Big Train English Electric 2 and it certainly qualifies as mellow.....imo a bit too mellow compared to part 1
