Greg Lake (Specifically in Tarkus)

I love all the above plus the "master" of tone: Eric Johnson. Check out Ah Via Musicom or later EJ records.
Surprisingly his 1st album, Tones has a dull kinda guitar sound to it...

Question:  Do people automaticaly like the tone if they like the guitarist? To me they are separate. Example:

I love the playing of Flower King Roine Stolt. I don't care for his thin, overly tight crunchy sound.
on the other hand, I don't much care for the more pop nature of Queen, but Brian May is a fine player
with tone from heaven. Totally original full sounding tone.  I love that squeal!

Maybe my favorite guitar tone is that thick as maple syrup(and just as sweet) tone of Dave Gilmour.
Robin Trower's tone is great for me as well.

Roye Albrighton has warm analog magic tones(clean & distorted) on Remember The Future.

Greg Lake's tone on Brain Salad Surgery(Karn Evil9 1st Imp.) is out of this world cool.  i wonder what he used for that.

Alex Lifefson's tone on Hemispheres is pure heaven to me.

I am such a loser for forgetting about Fred Frith. He recorded some really nice tones on his debut, from pure, gentle, and innocent ("Ghosts") to convincingly intense ("No Birds"). His guitar tone that you can hear from the video Step Across the Border is just ... pf-f ... give it a fecking listen.

EDIT: Drat. ... Forgot about Belew. The man was a guitar sound engineer, for Chrissakes.

Dude, my brother went to the college where he is a professor!  What one record would you suggest that best features
his soloing?

^ Oh, son of a gun ... in all due honesty, I've only heard his debut, "Guitar Solos", and the music from the aforementioned video. His work is wildly unpopular (to my knowledge). I wish I knew the answer to your question. According to RateYourMusic.com, getting Gravity or Cheap at Half the Price sounds like a reasonable thing for me to do. Gonna have to look for some samples, then.

Fred's a professor? ... Yaba-daba-doo.

^ The reason for what I said in the previous post is that, well, heh, ... I don't remember him soloing. He was more of an experimenter and a rhythm guitarist than a lead guitarist (to my recollection). Bear in mind: the album title may be Guitar Solos, but those are more like solo experiments than solo melodies, so that one's quite misleading.

Frith performs some outrageous solos during his time with Henry Cow.  They are anything but a perfect tone, but oh-so delicious.  HeartLegEndHeart................one of my fave all-time albums................

^ I've seen the cover of that album a lot. Must be very popular among the HC fans.

v Damn, I forgot about Page (his tones on things like "The Lemon Song" and "Custard Pie" have so much character, so much sex to them). I should try to remember every guitarist I heard in my life.

Jimmy Page (as on 'Stairway to Heaven' guitar solo)
Robert Fripp (as in 'Red')
Tony Iommi (as in 'Paranoid')
Slash (in general, I do think)
Steven Wilson (when he plays slow things like 'Half-Light')
Brian May (some of his slower solos are amongst the most beautiful guitar bits ever written)
Adrian Belew
Mick Ronson (on Bowie's 'The Man Who Sold the World' album)
This night wounds time.

Definitely Hendrix when playing live.

He just crancks up his amp volume until its distorted by itself, add some fuzz to it and you're there.

Machine Gun baby!!
