Marillion, followed by PFM/Banco, Kansas and Soft Machine (then Camel, VDGG ....)
Not sure that Marillion or VDGG are second tier? Mind you I suppose time moves on and their premier league status is a thing of the past.

Most of my favourite bands are on this list.
These bands are second tier ONLY because of lower album sales and fame compared to the "first" tier bands. In quality terms, most of these bands are actually better because they didn't sell out to gain popularity and achieve high sales.
I went for Camel (the best band that's ever played for me) but I love GG, Marillion, IQ, Strawbs, Focus, Renaiassance, Mannfred Mann's Earthband, Caravan and BJH and like most of the rest (except Magma and VDGG, and the latter only because of the vocals).

Sorry, but I was alive when GG were active and they were no more than a band with an enthustastic (and fairly large) cult following, mainly in universities. They (and VDGG, who were only just popular enough then to be inckuded here, thanks to their Italian following) were never remotely as successful as ELP, Genesis, Floyd and the other first tier bands.
Quality wise, GG were first tier beyond doubt; popularity wise, it was about as uncool as it could be to admit you liked them. The same applies for Marillion, where admitting you're a fan puts you on a par with someone who wears tweed suits and drives a Morgan in my experience.

If that is the meaning of "first tier" then it is equal to "commercially successful". Why use the euphemism?

Second tier, second division are both expressions widely used in this context. There is no mystery.
Although Marillion were not second tier. They were the top Prog band of their day.

It's Camel for me. I don't see why people make a fuss about descriptive language. Second Tier is perfectly clear and easy to use. Everyone knows exactly what it means in this context. Insisting on circuitous doublespeak gobbledygook for the sake of political correctness is ridiculous. And anyone who thinks Gentle Giant were ever as popular as ELP is nuts.

No real surprise on my vote, chalk up one for "The Flower Kings".
The one thing I'm curious about is your mention of 'Le Orme' and it seemed that you were saying that they're considered first tier. So here's my question, this is a band that I've never listened to, who's a fan, where should I start and are they an 'important' band.

Well what can I say? the fact that you feel it makes them sound second rate simply does not make it so. You are entitled to your feeling of course but it doesn't alter the fact. For my part I am not forming an opinion, just stating that the author did not intend it that way. And neither does anyone who uses the expression. If we meant that we would have said "second rate" rather..
You are right though. We very rarely agree on anything at all.
