I find Gabriels voice to be...excellent, its my favorite...but, if I had to say THE voice of prog...Id say Jon Naderson, thats why I voted for him.

But it was not easy...Anderson, Gabriel...and Hammil...are all so very...important,right? But I said no to Gabriel, because he is most knowen as a kinda Pop singer ( good pop that is), and Hammil is not that knowen...so it had to be Jon Anderson

Pog on!

I agree, although I'd liked to have seen Annie Haslam's name in the list...

Rather annoyed that your've neglacted all the female-voice proggers ..but I'll live, I'll live.  Greg Lake if you ask me...he has a very pretty voice but....... OH MY GOD!! YOU FORGOT DAVID BYRON!!!!!....I'm rather annoyed as you can probably tell.

Now honestly, do David Gilmour or Roger Waters immediately come to your mind when you think of voices in prog? Not to mention a few others, like Michael Sadler or John Lees? No, sorry, when I think of voices in prog the first voice that comes to my mind is Peter Hammill, followed by Daevid Allen and Robert Calvert (who are both not on the list either). After that I perhaps think of Peter Gabriel or Jon or Ian Anderson.
It was not for nothing that Robert Fripp said: "What Jimi Hendrix did for the guitar, Peter Hammill did for the voice".

Peter Hammill is the voice of prog.

Jon Anderson doesn't have the diversity, I think. Gabriel comes close, but I prefer Hammill's voice, and I think the voice of prog should be a distance from pop culture as well

My vote would have gone to Hammill too; of those listed I can't decide.

Mercury. In the whole music world, he is maybe the best singer ever known imho. I'm not a Queen fan at all (but a "A Night At The Opera" fan nonetheless), but Freddy is incredible.

 Peter Gabriel for me.

And Clepsydra's vocalist Aluisio Maggini I think has a wonderful voice.

Somehow reminds me of the joke of the German orchestra musician who spoke little English and, upon being questioned which instrument he played in English, answered: "I'm blowing the faggot"  ("Fagott" is the German word for "bassoon").

I really like VdGG and like all I've heard by Pete Hammill (granted I came to appreciate them much later than the usual first-tier prog bands), but I guess my feeling about his vocal approach that keeps me from choosing him is that he is more into a theatical approach than a, how do I phrase it?, a heartfelt sincere approach.

Anderson, Lake, and Gabriel (though he can be theatrical at times) vocalize in a way that more directly affects a listener's emotional state. Hammill's vocals sort of needs to go through the listener's intellectual filter first to be appreciated, at least in inital listenings.

I guess the difference is that with a theatrical performance, the audience is more aware of the performer performing, and not on what the performer may or may not really feel. I don't get the sense that Lake or Anderson are putting on a show when I hear them, but I do when I hear Hammill, and this is not at all a disparagment of Hammill. Just a difference in styles.
