They even don't make that much money from gigs I think Windhawk. Yesterday I was chatting one of the iconic names of the prog scene, he said he still plays in bars for 25$ to make some money. There must be a way out. People should pay for their entertainment and pleasure. Probably you can earn far more money working as a masseur during times you spend working for creating a music peace or practice music. It's pity...
Another interesting thing is one of the good money sources of musicians is marchendise. That is a good thing for advertisement but in the end you are earning money like a high street clothes shop.

I'm all for hating audiophiles and their ridiculous claims, but this is really not true. I can tell, and my "set-up" would anger any audiophile.

If I were a premium user I would be definitely angry to get a 160kbps streaming instead of a maximum one (like agreed). Also, judging by how much it pays, I doubt Spotify will make a difference for the indie scene. There's not much of a difference between zero and zero dot zero zero zero twenty nine, for an indie band.

I didn't say there weren't any differences, but that the differences aren't dramatic ;-) For dramatic differences, try listening to a 64 kb/s file, or a 56 kb/s one.

128 vs 320 is detectable but relatively minor. I bought premium for the mobile access and offline ability.
We'll see how the legal issues shake out. Artists were losing so much money to illegal downloads that any amount of revenue capture is probably seen as an improvement.
Like others have said, the few times I buy a hard copy CD I'm usually getting an artist I really care about and try to get it as directly as I can.
I think most artists are still making reasonable money playing live shows. But you have to have a show. Something that people can't get by listening to your record. Umphrey's McGee has an amazing show and they draw great crowds in medium sized venues. Devin Townsend is really funny and sends everyone home smiling. Even successful local artists usually have something about their live playing that makes people enjoy their evening. Prog is a listener's genre and watching great musicians perform their music note for note is only going to hack it for a narrow audience.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I somehow don't have any invites and I have had Spotify for 2 or 3 years now... was I supposed to have e-mailed them to get some?
Doesn't matter, as most of my US friends have it now anyway.
