Hi,
Heck ... it's taken me 50 years in listening and loving music, and ProgArchives only a couple of years.
There is a lot of information and work here ... the bad part being that there is no group organizing that information into a concise center of information ... and to me, while nice to have this place, it is sad to the music, as it brings it down to just fan'dom ... and fan'dom comes and go and tomorrow there is another site probably called the archives progressive ... (french style of writing and translation!) ...

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I know how you feel! I've discovered so many bands here that I enjoy, and cherish. It has become a hobby to me. I too like to dig around the forums for new music and read people's comments while listening to it. This site has the same like-minded people to walk you through the album. |

![]() ![]() To original question: I made me a task to listen to all the streaming examples on PA. I started about 6 months ago with the symphonic sub genre and I am currently at the letter G. |

31000 even at 1 hour each / 8 hours a day of listening = a little over 10 years of daily listening at that rate. Which for those of us who listen all day at work, and often more, is not out of the question.
But that's one listen to each album.
Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? No.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

And indeed the music which is in PA but doesn't deserve any attention!
If only for that reason, this whole exercise is a bit counter-productive........

A reminiscence if you will...
Many years ago (early 21st Century) as I was priotising my time by liustyening to as much prog roc as my ears could take ((earphones) and undergoing the pretext of working (for the purpses of acquiring prog rock music) my then leader and divine inspiration (aka the boss) finally approached and wondered if I got any work done in between surfing and listening. As it happens I got an amazing amount done thanks to musical inspiration. Anyway he saw I was listening to Caravan (CD cover). He stopped and started recommending Caravan albums (a fan too) and told me to continue and keep up the good work. He later went on to somewhere where they keep secrets but I was left alone after that. Still listening to the marvelous Caravan. (And all the other usual suspects and rogues out there...!) It's not the lifetime but what you use to occupy it. It'sd a very good lifetime doing this. Oh and if one includes the jazz and all the classical music, as well as the other rock and anything else that contibutes then one has to really hope for some reincarnation.... (also known as choose your remastered for CD transfer copies carefully...) |

As just my collection currently stands it would take me approximately 65,580 minutes to make it through my collection. 1089 hours. 732 days if I slept 8 hours a day. Slightly more that two years. I'm guessing there is no way to tally the total length of music on this site, but by dead reckoning you could possibly make it through all the music we currently have on this site. It might help if you drop out live duplicates and stuff you don't consider to be music and/nor progressive.
Let's assume that my collection only consists of 10% of the music cataloged here. If i did the math right, I'm looking at 20 years. So yes, even accounting for the extra stuff being constantly added. Of course I might not have the math right. Then you have to ponder how much stuff will be added while I am trying to work my way through the batch. Because I believe that prog will never die and nor will this site, it's not worth trying to do it. You really have to be selective musically and this site is about inclusiveness. So, choose wisely. No you could not because where would you start since nobody can agree what the first progressive rock album is?

There's sort of two conflicted questions in the OP. No I don't think that anyone could make it through PA in one life time, and I woudln't wish that on my worst enemy. But I do think its possible to get the "essense" of the site. For example, if you have most of the top 100 favorite albums on the PA site, and you really have heard and appreciate them. I think you've got the essence.
Like many here, I've spend years and years, digging deep into Progressive Rock. Its my favorite genre of music. I love it. And I enjoy knowing a lot of the music of most of the key bands on this site. The site has also turned me onto tons of great new/old Prog too. I always enjoy knowing that if an album gets a 3.90 or above I'm probably going to like it a lot. But there's some artists highly ranked on the site that I don't care too much for, but I think I still get the essence.
At the end of the day, many of the bands on this site are not worthy of repeated listens. In a genre of so many giants. Innovators and simply excellent artists there's even more average to boring artists. Why listen to those lesser artists when there's so many great artists. So I think getting the essence really means discovering a deep well of the great music on PA that you like for repeat playing, and then continuing discover new/old great stuff too. To me, thats the essense in the context of the OP.
All that said, I think its possibly to get the essense of not just PA but other musical genres of you're willing to put the major committment into it. Thats been my lifes passion. I may love Prog Rock the most, but I've greatly enjoyed discovering"

Even if you only listened to music for two hours a day (eh? I thought this was a Prog site - 2 hours? what? Is it your day off from listening to music? Is it national don't-listen-to-music day or something?) - 31,000 albums @ 45 minutes each is a little under 32 years - piece of cake - I've been listening to music since I was a nipper ... that's well over 50 years. But as Iván suggests, it's not the listening that's the problem, it's the cost ... it would be a $30/day habit.

it has been suggested on another forum that one can listen to one album by each PA artist, in just a few years.
