Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, too hard to choose between all those. Nirvana was my favourite when I was a teenager, but lately I've been more into Pearl Jam but not exactly their grunge albums.

THAT many votes for Soundgarden?! Eww... I've never really liked any of Chris Cornell's work.
Anyway, I voted for Alice in Chains, who is hands-down my favorite non-prog band. Stone Temple Pilots is a close second, though, and I'm disappointed that they haven't gotten any votes. |

Are Soundgarden winning because someone said in another thread they are "prog-related" ?

If you want to be technical about it, almost never. But some songs (Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, I Am One, more songs on Gish) are kinda grunge. |

To me neither Soundgarden nor any of this bands has nothing to do with prog at all. Soundgarden indeed were cited as Seattle's response to Led Zeppelin. That adjective I believe suits a little better for them. But that's it.
By the way, if I had to choose an album off any of this bands and label it prog related (although I also believe this would be exaggerated), it would be Silverchair's Diorama, which was a complete change in their sound. With orchestral arrangements and the use of instruments like piano, harpsichord, and even hammond organ I really really recommend this album to anyone. It's beautiful.

The Melvins are sludgy punk, not really grunge.
I think Alice in Chains is waaaaaaay closer to Prog-Related than Soundgarden is. Some Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins stuff is grunge, but far more of it is alternative. |

![]() Soup... voted on by some rock conessours as THE best rock album of the 90's. Those that didn't vote for it... still say 'Soup is one of the most underrated and overlooked great rock albums of the '90s'. Edited by micky - March 08 2010 at 17:12 |

I voted for Screaming Trees. Their album Dust, in particular, is one of my all-time favourites. I seem to recall reading that they didn't really consider themselves part of the grunge scene but got associated by virtue of being a Seattle band. Certainly, something grabbed me about this band even though I wasn't really a fan of grunge in general. They had a kind of hard rock meets psychedelia sort of sound that I found appealing.
