My Top Ten:
Tool* Porcupine Tree Mr. Bungle The Mars Volta Pain Of Salvation Sigur Ros Anekdoten The Tea Party* Indukti Opeth* Honorable Mentions: Anglagard Man Man Jaga Jazzist* Meshuggah✟ The Decemberists Cynic * I can't believe nobody has mentioned them yet! ✟ They were formed in the late 80s; that's why they couldn't make the list. Wow, I'm an idiot. I completely forgot about Opeth, one of the most innovative and original prog metal bands ever! I'm getting them into my list right now... |

I love Anglagard but what they did was already done on "Trespass" and ITCOTCK. I wouldn't add them to this top.
The Mars Volta - maybe the only original post '89 band who doesn't have followers because they are too unique (but if there are other bands out there resembling them please share). Sigur Ros - most post-rock bands sound like each other but no one sounds like Sigur Ros. After Crying - their debut is a superb and original avantgarde album. I haven't heard anything like it yet. Atheist and Death, agreed on that; but I don't think they're so unique any more (and I like Cynic and Blotted Science more). Replikas - eclectic prog with turkish themes and motifs, very original. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum Suspended Animation Dreams - the only thing I can relate them to is "Part The Second", only better, with more variety and melody |

I thought of Opeth but that's like saying Nirvana...in the beginning they were remarkably innovative but so many imitators have made them far from unique now. (I guess the same could be said of Tool).

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

But that doesn't change the fact that bands like Opeth and Tool did that type of stuff first. I don't think we should ostracize them from the rest just because so many people have copied them. That isn't the original bands' faults. Just my two cents . . . I'm just gonna . . . go over here, now . . . |

I actually disagree with that. Does the fact that other bands are unoriginal enough to imitate other bands change the impact from the originals? That can be said about any successful or innovative band. Should we say that King Crimson isn't as innovative anymore because other people take influence from them? That doen't change their originality at all IMO. |

You guys are probably right, but then it's hard not to include Nirvana. (Not my favorite band but the most innovative / unique post-1990??? gotta include them)

Well, that's what I did with TMV in my list. I enjoy those 'honorable mentions' all a lot more than I enjoy TMV, but I included them in the list anyway because I cannot deny the impact they have had on the modern Prog world. |

^ If you like Tortoise and Ulver, you definitely need to try Eivind Aarset, he's just been added to Fusion.
