It would be poetic justice if you all died because you didn't realize what H1N1 actually was. Not that I got one yet either, and I probably won't bother, but I have it coming for plenty of other reasons.

I don't understand the logic behind not getting a shot. Care to explain to me why so many of you fellas believe you're much luckier than the rest of us poor saps?

Because people with healthy immune systems in normal environments are very unlikely to catch the virus so why expose yourself imporbable yet concerning side effects associated with the vaccination? Why spend money on it if it will do you no good?
And why not leave the supply for those who actually need it like the elderly, infants, etc.

I believe its because of the vaccination histories of people from older age groups. I wasn't speaking of H1N1. I was talking about the seasonal flu. I thought the thread was too.

Well I guess now we have to just sit patiently and wait for Slarti to let us know which one it was. Fortunately, I didn't have anything else planned for the rest of the day.

Wow. That was such a well-articulated argument, and so relevant to my question, too! My whole outlook on this issue has now changed! really! If you can't defend your position with actual debate, being an a****le and resorting to name-calling is the second-best thing, I suppose. |

I'm doing it every autumn, but I skipped it this year for some reason. My mother is working in a clinic, so injection shots are commonplace in our house.
And we are not overdoing it - perhaps once or twice a year. But I guess it's a bit unusual: other people usually swallow a pill if they're sick: we get a shot in the arm at home. But I have to admit I'm avoiding medicals altogether most of the time, especially painkillers. |

Haha! Big Baby! Thats funny But seriously, he asked a question, no need to be a smartass. I've forgone them most of the time, because swine flu isn't very big anymore in Australia, and only was for a month. And there was only a couple of cases reported in my state anyway. However, if I lived in the US, I wouldn't consider not getting the vaccine. I'd probably say other people have avoided getting the shot due to lack of belief in medicine. I.E, they've heard you can get sick from injections, or for some unexplainable reason, they don't think they're at any real risk of contracting the illness, so they forgo the proper prevention. Just a guess though Edited by progkidjoel - November 09 2009 at 01:27 |

I lost respect for Billy Corgan long ago, but this just seals the deal:

It actually makes a lot of sense, considering that so far the lethality of this new strain of flu is not much higher than that of ordinary flu. Undoubtedly it's a tragedy for those who get really sick or really die from it, but last year many people died from ordinary flu without that much attention from the media. |

Didn't know I'd spark this kind of controversy. By the way, my arm still hurts.
After having the flu severely kick my ass for a few years in a row, I usually get one at the first opportunity. Edited by Slartibartfast - November 09 2009 at 07:04 |

I think I never had the flu ... usually I catch a bad cold once or twice a year, but that's all.

It's not unfounded. When flu vaccines were rushed into production to treat the 1976 epidemic of swine flu there were untested. Turns out there seemed to be a nontrivial correlation with Guillain-Barre syndrome unexplainable by simple random distribution. The chance may be remote, but the remote chance at a lethal nerve disease may be more concerning that the chance of bed rest and fluids.
