In the December 2008 issue of Jazz Times, Bill mused that he should retire so other young drummers will have a chance to be seen and heard.

So grateful that I was able to see Bill in virtually every incarnation, missing only Genesis and U.K. Such a consummate musician; such a clever and voluble man. Cheers for a brilliant performance career, and here's hoping for many more years of recordings.

Some have mistaken Mr. Bruford's wisdom for arrogance over the years.  It is refreshing to see someone hang it up while still at the top of his game before making a fool out of himself like his former colleagues (Yes) have over the last year.  He has of course not stated that he would stop playing, just performing live. I wouldn't be surprised to see him show up here and there as a guest on certain studio projects.

Is there a five year waiting period to be eligible for the Prog Hall of Fame?

Wakeman stops solo touring, now Bill drops out...what's next, Jon Anderson's voice dropping two octaves?!?

Seriously though, Mistah Bruford has always been in my top three drummers (somewhere between Keith Moon and Gene Krupa, if you must know). He shall be missed.

The 2 drummers I drew upon for my own style were Ringo Starr and Bill Bruford. Ringo had simplicity with a back-beat and complimentary embellishment. Bruford has the dynamics that raised the bar , His poly rythums and off-beats are inspiration of a progressive kind--said the drummer of 43 years of playing

Wakeman said that he will still make charitable appearances. He is very well known for his interest in charitable causes. He mentions this often in his book Grumpy Old Rock Star and Other Wonerous Stories. He was the first big western rock act to appear in Cuba at the request of Fidel Castro himself and even got to meet him personally. No fear, Steve Smith still has a lot of steam left in him and I would rate him a notch above Mr. Bruford.

I also had the extreme pleasure of seeing him perform live from about 6 feet away at The Bottom Line in NYC(which sadly isn't there anymore) with Upper Extremities and was blown away. Easily in my top 3 drummers,probably my favorite. He's one of the most musical drummers I've ever heard. Also,one of the nicest guys too. I met him before the show and was shaking in my boots because I wasn't sure how he would be,LOL, but he was just the coolest. Bill,thank you for all the years of incredible music, memories, influence and inspiration and enjoy your retirement!

But you know, towards the end in one of the interviews linked to this thread, he really turned his back on prog altogether, saying (in effect) it was in the past and he had moved on.........
