I have to say Hammond Organ. I just love it. I also love the sound of Fender Rhodes

The question asks "key instrument on prog" so it's synths for me.
but overall music, I'd say the Hammond has a special spot in me.

I voted for the synth since that technology came of age (Moog, ARP) just about at the same time as prog. Certainly the Hammond ranks right up there as well. The Rhodes I associate more with fusion.
Of course the Mellotron is conspicuous in its absence, but only as a brand name. It can actually be considered an early version of a synthesizer. It's certainly an example of pure sampling technology -- now available on any modern-day synth, except instead of tape we use memory. So for me it's part of the synth option.

No real surprise to note that Hammond and synth are most popular.
I was becoming very upset that nobody else had voted for the church organ, however, somebody else now has! Thank you, thank you, whoever you are!!

Synthesizer, followed by Mellotron. Then again, there are many different types of synthesizers, the poll doesn't specify which. I assume we're talking about Minimoog type synths though...
I'm a little bit tired of the Hammond frankly. It's ok in classic prog of course. And Borknagar use it nicely.

I wish I could vote for all of the above but I do enjoy the hammond organ and mellotron. The farfisa organ's another favorite of mine.

I love the sound of a Hammond organ. However, my vote has to go to our Bechstein D-280. A wonderful instrument.

Dang, I'm dissapointed that so few people have voted church organ. Such a full sound, and can both be used for making some of the most evil atmosphere in the world, or to create such a beautiful and grand mood.
I really would have expected more votes from you people.

As a Keyboard Player I voted for Synthesizer. ( I Play for Hamadryad and the new Genesis tribute "Dance On A Volcano" )
Seriously, I own a RD-170, a Fantom first generation and a XP-60 from
Roland, a An1x from Yamaha and a Nord Electro 2 and I can do nearly
everything I need to do with those keyboard...it's only a matter of
tweaking sounds and finding the right patch for the right things.
Pianos, CP-70, Rhodes, Wurlitzers, Ep's, clavinets, Piannettes, Organs,
Farfisa, Guitars, Mellotron, Vocal, Winds, Synths, Moog, EVERYTHING!!!
And it cost less then buying every single instrument and....just like
that, I have a Hammond C3 and a Leslie and I had a Mark II Stage
Seventree Rhodes a couple of years ago (still have the hammond at the
hamadryad studio). Did you ever tried to brought that to a gig? It
weight 200 pounds per instrument dammit...Another point for the
synthesizer!!

Had the question omitted mention of prog , it could have been piano or synth . Classical music , the harpsichord rules ! Too bad there is not enough of it in prog!

I don't play, so I don't have to think about practical issues. Here's how I like it:
