Shaun Guerin performed the Peter Gabriel part in "The Cinema Show" a Genesis tribute band. He has also recorded with Clearlight Symphony and can be heard on the new Ken Jaquess project, K2: Book of the Dead. Shaun released two CDs before his death and has one more "Archive" which was released after he died. Check out this track from the Epic Quality of Life: Inside of This. http://l1.yousendit.com/d.php

The band Lands End, formerly of California, now based in Las Vegas, play a eclectic style of modern prog. Their website offers enough MP3's to make a complete CD. Lands End also has a side project called Transience that is similar but based more on ambient structures. |

Frogg Cafe started out as a Frank Zappa cover band. Their style is very eclectic, ranging from powerful prog excursions to jazz and even modern classical. Their music is tinged with humor, but expect great musicianship. Violin, trumpet, keyboard, drums, guitar, bass, harmony vocals.... the whole package. Their BIO contains an MP3 for the instrumental Gagutz. They have a new CD in the works.

IZZ is another East Coast American band with one foot in the pop realm and the other planted firmly in Prog. I hear King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, the Beatles and Celtic music in their tunes. Check out the MP3's on their website. Pay close attention to those on I Move, some are full length and it's their best album. They are working on a new CD as well.

Singularity is a band in transition. Their first two CDs are as different as day and night. The first :The Colour of Space sounds like a long lost 80's RUSH album. Their second, "Between Sunlight and Shadow is a 15 piece epic that explores a more ambient, spacey, Pink Floyd tone. They are working on their third album, which introduces two new members, so I'm sure it will sound very different than the last. |

Man on Fire is another band with a heavy RUSH sound. Check out this clip. They are working on a new studio album with Adrian Belew on guitar and David Ragsdale on Violin. http://s17.yousendit.com/d |

Off the provided list I've only listened/heard. Echolyn, Suffocating The Bloom. great album, a bit reminiscent of Gentle giant, with a folky symphonic, kinda fusion like soft rock, very melodic nice accoustics. Allan Holdsworth, All Night Wrong. Great live set, wonderfull clear guitar play, and a good rhythm section supporting the guitar, fusion/jazzy, with the emphasis on the guitar. tried some other albums aswell, but liked them less than this live album. Proto-Kaw, Before Became After. Early kansas, new music, quite alright, but the music didn't grab me as much as 70's Kansas did. Discipline, Unfolded like Staircase. With the beautifull Canto IV (downloadable from this site), great album. Generally modern classic symphonic prog, with some Metal and neo-prog tendencies. nice band, unfolded is their best effort. Don't know the other mentioned bands. Any recommendations which of them are good to look out for (big music beurs (sorry dutch) in Utrecht coming up, so I could do with some informative name-dropping)

You described Izz fairly well...except I would have reversed it...one foot in prog and the other firmly planted in pop......still good stuff. Salem Hill has some tremendous prog sounds...my favorite of the bunch that I have heard. Be is a terrific cd. They have managed to successfully blend prog with some very tasteful alternative rock sounds. Land's End...great music, but the vocals are a tad weak. Proto-Kaw..what if Kansas was prog throughout an entire cd...not quite but close. Discipline...great singer...a cross between Peter Hammill and Perry Ferrell...also if you love your music served up dark...look no further. Glass Hammer...cheesy neo-proggish band...over-rated. Singularity...i liked at 1st but then the music started to pale after a few listens...very unusual for progressive rock. I have heard of Dark Aether Project...do a search on the internet for progressive rock and they would pop up near the top of the page....at least it used to about a year ago. I have never heard them, though....wouldn't mind hearing them either Danbo Echolyn...All I know is they are similiar to Gentle Giant...I love Gentle Giant so I'd probably like to hear these guys too. Relayer...Chicago based progressive rock band whose albums seem to be unavailable here in Chi-Town Allan Holdsfield...anyone who knows Danbo at least knows of Allan Holdsfield...never heard his material, however.

Relayer, Dark Aether and Echolyn will invade your mind, young man... But not like Michael Jackson.
I thought Discipline's Matthew Parmenter sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel... Perry Farrell, eh? |
