Geck0: Yeah, it is.  I haven't heard that much off FoaBP, but wasn't impressed.   Miasma's is very good.

Rico: At the start of 1997 I was newly married.  And in bigger news, Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule.  Eric Clapton's "Change my World" won record of the year at the Grammy's... haha

I think it was very strong year for progressive music.  A Zeuhl and Avant Prog album on the top of the studio album list for that year (real classics), which may indicate that it was weak for some other categories but actually many great albums from different categories but real classics, and a major album for Wyatt with Schleep.

Just a few of my highlights, Hoyry Kone's Houno Parturi, Robert Wyatt's Schleep, Koenji Hyakkei's Viva Koenji, Happy Family's Tossco, Bondage Fruit's Recit, Tipographica's Floating Opera....

An amazing year for Japanese Zeuhl and H. Kone's and Wyatt's are modern classics.  But it all depends on what one is looking for.

Nice.

And, well, congratulations. Tongue

I think I started playing the piano in 1997. Or was it 1996?

I have Viva Koenji! on CD and still haven't listened to it!

Angherr Shisspa is a modern classic though.  Rattims Friezz is one the best tunes I have ever heard, it's amazing in every way.  I also love Alamaailman Vasarat's second release, which is also an amazing album.

As for Hoyry-Kone's Huono Parturi, I'm not over keen on the first track, but the rest is amazing.  I still haven't heard their second album.

By the way, Logan, I am in the middle of formulating some questions to ask the guys from Alamaailman Vasarat and as you know, some of them were in Hoyry-Kone, so I'm asking about that band as well.  Hopefully the interview will be completed eventually... I'm trying to sound coherent and think of suitable questions at the same time and it's not easy!

Oh and Tossco is on my next order list... I have their debut and it's brilliant, so I cannot wait to hear Tossco.

What are your thoughts on Amygdala?  I really like it, but I do wish they'd gotten in a real brass player.

Angherr Shisspa is my favourite Japanese Zeuhl album, and one of my favourite albums period.  True masterpiece; I don't put Viva Koenji on the same pedestal.  I like all of Huono Parturi, but the track that really hooked me is Karhunkaato.  Good luck with the AV interview; fantastic!

As for Amygdala, I've only heard samples that I recall.

The problem with Amygdala, is that the band consists of two people, a keyboard player and a guitar/bass player.  I do think the drumming is real though, but the liner notes mentions no drummer... however, the brass sections and the 'cello are all done on the keyboards.  It doesn't sound awful, but they'd have sounded better with the real instruments.

Angherr Shisspa really is a masterpiece, that's for sure.  I think I have three of their albums altogether.  I also think Le Silo's debut is pretty much perfect, but then that consists of the same pianist as on Angherr Shisspa, so maybe I'm biased.  I need Tossco, as I said, because Happy Family is a good album in its own right.

Amygdala don't have a drummer, they program their drums.
It's very well done, but the programming in the Xhohx album is even better.

That drumming's programmed?  Wow, it almost sounds real to my ears.  It's obvious the 'cello and the horns are done with the keyboard though, but they're very well done too.

Because I'm a collaborator, Schiz.  This for non-collaborators. Wink

Anyhow, back on topic!  Does anyone else have a top 5 to offer?

Well I'm exempt... I'm not sure about PR's like yourself though.  Logan will surely let you know.

You can still post your top 5 though. Thumbs%20Up

Yeah, Schizo, by collabs I mean all who 'officially' volunteer/ work for the site (i.e. four stars and up).  So while this is not meant for official contributors/ staff , anyone can post their list if they want to (and I think it's interesting to see many different lists and that may be helpful to others as it may remind them of certain albums, or cause them to check out certain albums), but "staff" choices won't count in the compilation list (see Kotro's post on page one for the latest compilation list).

It's at 95 when you limit it to studio albums.  EDIT: make that 82.

Talking about rank in the top 100, though now I see it at the number 82 position for studio albums, and back again to 95 for all album types.

The last compilation list here.  Hopefully this'll pick up more steam after Christmas.

Don't expect to hear much more from 2007 in the next weeks... Since I can change the list if necessary, here goes:

1 - PHIDEAUX Doomsday Afternoon (5)
2 - BLACK BONZO Sound of the Apocalypse (4)
3 - NEW TROLLS Concerto Grosso: The Seven Seasons (3)
4 - PORCUPINE TREE Fear Of A Blank Planet (2)
5 - GAZPACHO Night (1)

Compilation List:

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (10)
Gazpacho - Night (6)
Blackfield - Blackfield II (5)
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon (5)
Black Bonzo - Sound of the Apocalypse (4)
Satellite - Into The Night (4)
New Trolls - Concerto Grosso: The Seven Seasons (3)
Marillion - Somewhere Else (3)
Reasoning, the - Awakening (2)
Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement (2)
Anekdoten - A Time of Day (1)
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos (1)

Blackfield II could have easily entered my list, but it isn't exactly a prog album. Ulver, Marillion, Rush and Anekdoten all fought Gazpacho for that last spot, but Gazpacho's album consistency gave them the edge...
