Iron Maiden, not dissing their music or anything, certainly shouldn't belong in the poll. Were are talking about the giants that stand next to Genesis, Yes and Floyd. |
As big a Maiden fan as I am, I do agree 100% with the above statement. IM were certainly influenced by prog, and were a big influence in the development of Prog Metal, but here we're talking about Classic Prog, and they don't belong to that category. Perhaps, after this post, some people here will realise I am not a fangirl .... Back to the topic at hand, I voted Caravan, who deserve much more credit as prog greats than they get. I'd also put Gentle Giant almost at the same level, because of their authentic progressive spirit and outstanding musicianship.

I would say Camel more than Gentle Giant and VDGG, cause they had some mainstream success

Interesting question...
Camel. This band made some of the most beautiful music of all time, so their greatness is without question.
But then... could we kick Rush out and change it for VDGG? Hammill and co. were darkest and deepest prog band. And they still shine!
Marillion would also deserve their place, but I think "big 7" (or 8) is an "old prog" community. And "new prog" should have it's own!!!

Well, the big seven are the ones who paved the way for prog in popularity in the 70's. Besides Zappa, none of these bnds made lasting hits, or was big on the scale that the original big seven were.
So, I will choose Zappa, the only one who comes near my definition.

It's got to be Van der Graaf Generator. They've not made a bad album yet, and their music is so musically interesting. They have a way of painting pictures with music, the only other bands I have heard do that are the other "Big 7" you mentioned

To me, Zappa is already on the list. The man was, to be blunt, a genius musician. Let his memory never be tarnished.

not sure what the 13 people who voted for Camel were thinking...
no where in the same league.. musically.. or in importance.. or in
abiltiy to be seen outside of the world of prog ..which is important to
transcend if you want to be on that list.
Zappa.

You are entitled to your opinion, however wrong it is. Genesis 78 Camel 74 in the "which do you prefer poll"; I can't imagine any other band on the list achieving near parity with Genesis. That alone should be a compelling reason why Camel should be in the big 8.

hahahhahahha oh that is one hell of a reason right there... history and common sense be damned
hmmm...
first off... when talking popularity.. there are no right or wrong
answers.. and yet again.. interesting questions and polls
like this because yet another variation of the some old sh*t that
passes for popularity polls.
now ... for the way I answered the question....
can you honestly say that Camel was as important as Zappa and
defined prog in the manner Zappa did.. or had anywhere near the
career he did.
If so.. I'd love to hear how ....

Gentle Giant by far, they should replace Rush in fact. Rush have even said that they have been influenced by GG. Why the hell is VDGG in the lead? They're ok but they meander way to much and aren't memorable at all. Whatever, more people vote for GG, I would think that people on this site would realize that they are the best choice. I love Camel, but they were heavily influenced by many of the bands on the list, especially Pink Floyd, so to put them on the same list as their influences would be ridiculous. Frank Zappa would have to be my second choice, likely for obvious reasons.

Ohmm....tough one....
In my mind there are several options, but all have drawbacks:
1. Marillion - obviously hugely influential, very recognizable, and somewhat known by the mainstream. But they're also of the second wave of prog, and thus are less original. Also, they frequently go into intelligent pop/rock.
2. Van der Graaf Generator - Probably the most logical choice. The music is certainly an acquired taste as is Hammill's voice . Lots of high-quality, classic-sounding (I can only imagine what they sounded like on vinyl...) prog, but with a very patchy career. No single completely solid albums, IMO.
3. Camel/Caravan - Both followed similar musical paths: excellent prog at the beginning and middle, deterioration into pop and worse songwriting as the late 70s and 80s dawned. However, Camel did have some good 90s albums, so I hear.

it's a good indicator when you are dealing with a truly unfashionable class of rock music like Prog. It's one thing shouting down an argument that Abba must be better than, say, Zappa because they sold more albums but when one is dealing with something like Prog popularity (amongst its own fans) is usually a sign of quality. That doesnt account for personal taste but as a basic indicator...

Micky must be mad.Gaga.Off his rocker.

hahahha.. nah.... not mad....
just right
Camel is unknown to anyone who isn't a prog fan. Zappa, like those 7..
if you are a music fan ...you know them and what they are about.
