^ the more albums you know, the more difficult it gets to just pick one favorite. It just becomes a random selection between albums that you like equally well, and mentioning one of them while leaving the others out tells you nothing.

I agree with SnowDog and Mike. Your favorite album changes from time to time in my opinion, so if you use it too quick you might regret it later.

Well then I guess I have no idea what the 6 star review would be used for. IT still is a cool idea. Maybe for masterpieces of prog? |

Of course a general problem of introducing an extra star is: what about the existing ratings? Should we do a mass mailing, informing people that they have to adjust their ratings? On my website I recently introduced a way to submit more fine grained ratings in the top 10% area: instead of 0% 5% 10% 15% 20% ... 95% 100% people can now choose from 0% 20% 40% 50% 60% 65% 70% 75% 80% 85% 90% 91% 92% 93% ... 99% 100% So rather than extending the existing scale to 110% or 120% you can add more subdivisions in the upper area. Translated to the archives this would mean: rather than adding a 6th star, introduce a step between 4 and 5 stars (4.5 stars). Old ratings still become less accurate (we don't know whether someone who rated 4 or 5 stars would have chosen 4.5 stars had it then existed), but on average the meaning stays the same. Any comments? ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - December 23 2006 at 09:33 |

That was the other thread I was going to start... progarchives definitely needs a 4.5 star option. As is, I feel hardpressed to pick between4 and 5 for an album that I think is not a masterpiece, but is more special than just your average four star album (Aqualung, Fragile, Felona E Sorona, among others). |

So accept the pressure and make a choice. The fact that many other people will do the trick by averaging things out. To help you save some time: I joined before summer and have seen discussions on this topic since then, all to the same effect. Nothing changes, because of the huge impact of changing everything now, after several years of reviewing. Frankly, I don't care - I found many great albums just by filtering out the 4 and 5 star reviews, and many others by listening to a 3 star anyway. |

Actually, this is the easy solution...members should be encouraged to think of a fifth star as a rare and special thing, whereas now they're simply discouraged from using it. Marty DiBergi was right! |

I wouldn't be satisfied with a 4.5 only. I'd like 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4,
4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9. All showing four stars of course.

^ why should a "4.9" show as "4"? I mean, it's not what people would expect.

I think I know what "folly is trying to say (note: I haven't read any posts on this topic) there are a couple of albums that you want everyone to know are extraordinarily good in your own opinion, and 6 stars would illustrate this. However I’m not particularly fond of the idea. 120% for an album just doesn’t make sense. |

I'm in favor of the addition of a 4.5 star rating too... but in this case I would tend to rate almost every album with 4.5 stars :/
About the 6 star rating hmm... would be hard to choose, and subject to change. |

4.5 stars is much better than 6 stars, because us all being logical people, we know that it is impossible to give an album 120%. Seriously.

Introducing of .5 stars ratings seems logical and more accurate to me. Actually this is "number of points out of ten" system, which is in my opinion more suitable when evaluating an album.
