Thanks, Bern and Geck0 -- I really feared I'd be alone in my reaction.

Look, I'm really not trying to offend anyone personally, but I just can't relate to that kind of "humour."

I worked 15 years in hospitals, and never once did I find the real suffering of others to be even slightly amusing. Maybe I'm out of touch with the times....

Assuming that none of you speak Japanese (and thus can't understand the show's dialogue), the "joke" seems to be watching stupid people willingly take a hit in the testicles (very vulnerable organs) over and over. I got the "joke" the first time, and didn't laugh, but of course we have to see the same "punch line" what, five times?

If I hit accidently hit my head really hard in front of you, would that be funny? How about if I crashed my motorcycle? No? What if I was a complete stranger, and wearing some sort of Japanese robe?

Seriously, with all the exposure to violence on TV, movies the web & video games, psychologists have proven that it leads to desensitivity, and greater acceptance of casual violence -- especially in the young and impressionable.

Who among you would have the humanity, and strength of character to walk out on a show like that? Who would intervene, if they saw two guys kicking another in the head on the street? (I have, for the record.) If one of your friends was going to meet another (long after school, when tempers have had ample time to cool) for a pre-arranged fight, would you try to talk him out of going, or would you just follow the rest of the stupid, cruel little sheep to watch two people beat each other about the head, all in the name of their "reps?" (I know from experience that this is a common thing at high schools these days -- "appointments" to have fights, with lots of cheering spectators. If you've been part of that cheering flock, then shame on you for not having the strength of character to try to prevent it -- or at least stay home! (Fights used to be a spur of the moment thing, and often friends tried to break them up. Girls almost never fought physically.)

Have you ever watched while several people beat on one helpless person? Have you joined in? (If so, you are truly scum, and no better than an animal.)

Who here is not ashamed to shed a tear of compassion in front of others at a sad scene in a movie, or on the news? Again and again here, people say that sentimental songs "suck," or are "padding." (I read this in a review here recently, regarding a sad song about a breakup: "as if anyone besides the guy and his girlfriend care" This implies that love, and the powerful sadness at its failure, are not universal human emotions -- as if love, or the pain of its loss, is not a valid, age-old artistic theme.

Without compassion, where are we? What are we? Brute beasts?

Stuff like this makes me worry for the future.

My lovely daughter turned 13 today. Do I need to worry that the young man sure to show up at my door to take her out soon will have had all human feelings driven out of him via a steady diet of "Grand Theft Auto," black/death metal and popular movies like "Hostel?"

I'm afraid that many, many people need to work on acquiring some basic humanity --though those attitudes are normally ingrained -- or not -- by age five or so.

(BTW, you'd be welcome here, Bern & Geck0 -- you are clearly not sheep, and are not afraid to take a stand for basic decency. Bravo -- you are very brave!)

Was my post too "gay?" Would you like to kick me in the head now, for daring to imply that you should feel atwinge of guilt when you condone or applaud needless violence?

I wholeheartedly agree Peter. The depravity if the human race is despicable and worry indeed and it's not just on television or at the cinema, but also in literature as well. So I hope that book you're going to read isn't by someone like Chuck Palahniuk or something.

Canada does indeed seem a wonderful place (yes, even the French speaking part Wink

), so maybe one day I'll make a visit there.

	Wow that was a wonderful post Peter. I feel exactly the same. Notice my first post in that thread. I surely didn't laugh. See, Québécois and Canadians can get along well sometimes.
