I only know him from the National Health albums, but I will play Phlakaton in his memory - the greatest phonetic drum solo ever recorded!
RIP mate, way too young.

How sad. Only know a little of his work from Hatfield & the North but he impressed. No age to go, either.
RIP

Wow. This is really sad news and very shocking too. He will be greatly missed. I have the Absolute zero album and I still haven't played it. Now I have more reason to play it.

Terrible news and especially at his age!
One of my favorite drummers, and one of the most talented. He will be missed.

Oh my god!
This has upset me. I saw Hatfield and the North last year and although I didn't meet him myself (I met Richard Sinclair and Phil Miller was stood nearby), I will greatly remember him from this gig especially. The gig was amazing and a huge surprise. At the time of attendance, I hadn't heard much Hatfields, but the gig just blew me away, amazing! Pip Pyle you will be missed. So young too. My own father reaches 60 soon, so it's such a shame he died at only 56. Requiscat in pace Pip Pyle. |

Pip was an amazingly excellent drummer. Hatfield and the North, National Health, Absolute Zero..... This greatly saddens me. RIP Mr. Pyle. |

So... does anyone know what the cause of death was? Was he terminally ill?

Has anyone bothered to check the authenticity of this report? I have been all over the Net - including the BBC news, CNN and others - and not one news source is reporting this story.
Can anyone actually confirm it?

So I am sure they'd know firsthand...

Pierre Moerlen last year, now Pip Pyle - another great drummer moves to the realm of afterlife before his 60s. Like someone said bafore me, the jam in Heaven is getting better. Picture a quintet with two drummers (Pyle and Moerlen), plus saxophonist Elton Dean, bassist Jaco Pastorius and flutist Sacha van Geest. Pure jazz-art-rock!!

Well Pyle was no McCartney! Couldn't find a link either , but if you check Progressive Ears, there is a thread with more details in their forum
The FMPM organizers have received confirmation.
Hatfield were supposed to be playing at the ProgQuebec-organized festival in Montreal sept 15 & 16.

Also mentioned on Calyx. http://calyx.club.fr/index.html
He died with his boots on, just after a great Hatfield gig, but he died much too soon. Listening to Of Queues and Cures just now - Binoculars is a total classic.
