Transatlantic with out about doubt is the biggest. You can't beat Stolt, Morse, Portnoy, and Trewavas all on the same album. All from different bands making incredible music.
honorable mention to
The Tangent
Liquid Tension Experiment (Pre-Rudess Dream Theater)
Neal Morse's (?) album
Ayreon

I heard of the big 5 not including Jethro Tull, but also heard of the big 6 with Tull.
Despite our personal tastes, those are the generally considered big 5 or 6.

ELP, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic...
Oh, we're not talking about supergroups, we're talking about supergroups... I get it.
My personal choices would be Genesis, Dream Theater, Van Der Graaf Generator, Pain Of Salvation and Magma.
The real big five would probably be Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and ELP.

My top BIG 5 supergroups is:
KING CRIMSON marked the birth of a mature and extremely aggressive ''progressive'' sound (psychedelic with symphonic, electronic, experimental jazz, and even metal and folk).
Pink Floyd (psychedelic & space rock)
Jethro Tull (folk prog) Rush (progenitors of progressive metal)
Marillion (NEO PROGressive or the prog of the new wave)

As we are talking about the supergroups and not (only) about the favourite ones, my list will look like:
Van der Graaf Generator
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
................
................
Yes
Pink Floyd

There should be a big seven:
King Crimson
ELP
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Yes
Jethro Tull
Rush
If I had to drop 2 to get to a 'five' the it would be Rush and King Crimson.Rush came later and were worshipped by metalheads as well as prog fans.Crossover band that appealed to all rock fans that accounts for a lot of their success.King Crimson were successfull in Europe but not as much elsewhere.ELP should remain in as they were one of the biggest bands in the world 1970-1977 selling out massive venues from South America to Japan as well as America and Europe. Then it all went tits up but that doesn't change where they were at their peak.

Though I'm not as familiar with some of the lesser known artists here are my five;
Genesis (Gabriel era in particular, best overall)
Yes (incredible musicianship)
ELP
(terrible lyrics, but there instrumental work is supreme)
Pink Floyd (not as "progressive" as the others, but their works are outstanding)
Supertramp (though on the popish side, this bands music is quite tight and well
composed, there is a reason for there great success.)

My symphonic rock dinosaurs (a cynical nickname by the venomous UK musical press in the mid-Seventies) are:
- Genesis: innovative blend of folk, rock and classical, captivating shifting moods and wonderful 12-
string guitars
- Yes: amazing interplay, virtuosic skills
- ELP: virtuosic and self-indulgent, the inventors of 'pomprock'
- King Crimson: capricious, their debut album is one of the most pivotal progrock
albums, alternating between the feminine (Mellotron/acoustic guitars) and male
(fiery electric guitar and saxophone) side
- Pink Floyd: great atmospheres and very compelling soli on guitar and keyboards, I
love the controversial The Wall and consider this 2-LP as their best effort
(subjective!)

In terms of commercial success:
Genesis Floyd Yes ELP (if only for a short time) Rush
King Crimson and Tull come close. VDGG, GG, BJH, Camel never made the big league in terms of sales
But if it's personal choice:
Camel Genesis Strawbs Mostly Autumn Gryphon

In terms of commercial success worldwide:
1. Pink Floyd 2. Genesis (though mainly due to Collins-led 80s pop-rock output) 3. Jethro Tull 4. Rush 5. Yes
that's purely on album sales and isnt 100% accurate as reports vary wildly. What is certain is that Jethro Tull have sold vast quantities of albums and not many here seem to know that.

To me, the biggest five are:
1. King Crimson
2. Yes
3. Genesis
4. ELP
5. Rush/Jethro Tull (tie)
Edit: Oh, GG and Camel would share the 6th place.

Just curious. Has Genesis sold more of their prog albums than
Jethro Tull? Because if that list is made including We Can't
Dance etc. I think of that list as a bit misleading. Jethro Tull were
much bigger than Genesis in the early to mid 70's weren't they?

Very much so.If you discount the 80s Genesis albums (which you cant really do) then JT would indeed be second!

Uggh... I probably have 20 top 5 superbands (sounds like a heavy duty rubberband).
If I had to choose:
Genesis
VdGG
Yes
Frank Zappa
Pink Floyd
and Tull and Steve Hillage and Caravan and Dream Theater and Rush and Mahavishnu Orchestra...
