Careful - by saying Emperor are Proto Prog, you're effectively saying that Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir et al are all Prog...

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Proto-prog is a confuse label to put over the beatles and deep Purple. So, excluding these groups, The Moodies are the logical choice.

And once again, I thank you for adding HP Lovecraft (my vote) Huges!

The Moody Blues, to my mind no contest. But that's just me.
It's a Beautiful Day had a couple of nice moments back when. White Bird is their claim to fame. I actually saw them live at the old Kinetic Playground in Chicago. Standing through the entire show, they blew the other bands away.

The Beatles (big surprise coming from me ). Another vote would have to go for DP. Just very good rock, with enough prog to keep it imaginative. I would also say The Moody Blues, but I believe they are prog, not proto, or related.

I never listened to alot of material from most of the bands in the poll, but maybe enough to make an informed decision. The Beatles and The Moody Blues are the only ones I see as contenders (Deep Purple is a metal band - I've seen them referred to as otherwise in reference to early stuff, but come on! ...just a hardrock/metal band and one of the greatest!). I love both bands, but the Moodies meant more to me as a kid - meant certainly more acid trips - but I always saw the Beatles as being the superior pop musicians, even in later efforts, and the Moodies being just a touch more "out there" and experimental. That says alot considering the Beatles ground breaking Sgt. Peppers and subsequent works. For Proto-prog, my vote goes to The Moody Blues!
