Peter Hammill mentions Nick Lowe and David Hemmings in "Pushing Thirty".
All the writers watch each other for the way to go, follow each other like lemmings - swear they're all waiting for Nicky Lowe to turn out like David Hemmings...

Old stuff....
"Crequee Alley" - Mamas & Papas
"I dig rock 'n' roll music" - Peter, Paul & Mary
Either song mentions a bunch of other artists.

Non-prog -
but there's the famous Cheap Trick line from Surrender -
"...got my Kiss records out!"

Not prog, obviously, but Charlie Daniels wrote a song about southern rockers:
"The South's Gonna Do It Again"
Well, the train to Grinder's Switch is runnin' right on time And them Tucker Boys are cookin' down in Caroline People down in Florida can't be still When ol' Lynyrd Skynrd's pickin' down in Jacksonville People down in Georgia come from near and far To hear Richard Betts pickin' on that red guitar
Chorus: So gather 'round, gather 'round chillun' Get down, well just get down chillun' Get loud, well you can be loud and be proud Well you can be proud, hear now Be proud you're a rebel 'Cause the South's gonna do it again and again
Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay He ain't good lookin', but he sure can play And there's ZZ Top and you can't forget That old brother Willie's gettin' soakin' wet And all the good people down in Tennessee Are diggin' barefoot Jerry and C.D.B

One of rock'n' roll anthems, "My my hey hey" (Neil Young):
"The king is gone but he’s not forgotten This is the story of a johnny rotten."
Also someone told about the connections between Genesis' "As sure as eggs is eggs (Supper's ready)" and Beatles' "Scrambled eggs" (first title of "Yesterday").

How about "spammings"? Though I must admit there was no spamming at the
time that song was recorded. But "slammings" would rhyme with lemmings
too. Anyway, he just picked two artists at random in tazs song; the
only reason he picked Nick Lowe was that he rhymed with "go".

Does Dream Theaters " Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" count?? (in Octavarium) and they also mentioned Kurt Cobain in their song Just Let Me Breathe. |
Pink Floyd also mentioned Lucy in the Sky in Let There Be More Light. Not a band name but a well-known song, so I suppose it can count.
Good stuff - keep them coming! |
They weren't referring to The Beatles' hit --- Nick Mason openly acknowledges that Syd was talking about LSD (which back then was often called 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'). Porcupine Tree - Pure Narcotic 'You keep me listening to The Bends'; The Bends is of course a Radiohead album. Porcupine Tree - shesmovedon 'Your newest craze/Is Straight Out of The Face by The Bed Unread'; The Bed Unread was an underground 80s group from Britain.

In Shangri-La from A New World Record, the line goes:
"My Shangri-La has gone away
Faded Like the Beatles on Hey Jude"
And Bowie's All The Young Dudes was already mentioned but also in that song he writes:
"And my brother's back at home, with his beatles and his stones"

You can found a lot of references in this part of Octavarium:
III. Full Circle (12:15-18:27) Lyrics by Mike Portnoy
[Isn't

[Running

Falling back]
Spinning round and round
[Looking outward
Reaching in]
Scream without a sound
[Leaning
over
Crawling up]
Stumbling all around
[Losing my place
Only to]
Find I've come full circle
flying
off the handle with careful with
that axe eugene gene the dance machine
messiah light my fire gabba gabba
hey hey my my generation's home
again
[Running

Falling back]
Spinning round and round

Stumbling all around
[Losing my place

Yes, but he did the narrative on Rick Wakeman's Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, which means he's included on an album in the archives. That's prog enough for me, even if the album is a bit of a dud.
