Best to start with Octavarium as ithas a bit of everything on it, metal, ballad, epic etc. Will give you a general feel for Dream Theater.

Well, I have been listening to Scenes From A Memory, and it is awesome, I mean what an amazing display of writing and musicianship.  The guitar player is almost unbelievably good, the keyboard player is awesome, the bass player is solid and even throws down an awesome solo near the end, and the drummer is one of the best I have heard in a long, long time.
