I had Pieces of Eight at one time...I can remember how Renegade was their big hit for that album....I prefered Queen of Spades myself or even Blue Collar man

I didn't go that far
I just thought "hick", (You need to read this story of their first recording session in New York it is so typical hick goes to the big city) which they have called themselves many times, was more correct than hippie. Who else would be in the catagorie?

There was a radio station in So Cal when that album came out that played Pieces of Eight (the Song) every morning at 6 am for like a year straight. I do believe though that is their most progressive album. PO8 was one of their more progressive songs as was Hanna which is on the same album.

Who else indeed? That's one lonely sub-genre
The only ones I could think of would be the Dixie Dregs, and maybe some of the more instrumentally-inclined Southern Rockers like the Allman Brothers.

The Allman Brothers might possibly have been
Hicks but boy could those s**tkickers play.
Duane Allman and Dicky Betts must ranks as two of
the most under-rated axemen in rock history.
Well maybe not Duane cause he died and was
therefor lionised but Dicky Betts is a helluva player.
And probably the Allmans should get some prog
recognition due to the simple fact that they had two
drummers. Over the top or what!

well true but all you have to do is listen to the slide guitar on Layla to know how great he was/could have been.

Yeah he was great but I always just felt that Betts
never got his due as he was always overshadowed
by Duane's death.
Personally, I think some of his guitar work is the
equal of and often better than anything Duane did.
And, crucially, he wrote a lot of great tunes too, like

Kansas is widely considered progressive "with a touch of southern rock". Not that big of a deal to make it its own sub-catagory.

Hey, I'm shatterwolf and I'm the new guy around here. I love prog. rock, and I live for it. It's hard for me nowadays to express my love for this music, since most of the kids at my school either are wiggers, or my friends like stuff like Greenday, Sublime, etc. They think I'm nuts for liking Kansas, Yes, Genesis, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd 'Hendrix... Psh, what do they know. I'd take "South Side of the Sky" over whatever the hell they listen to anyday. I started listening to Yes when I was about 12, and loved them ever since. I'm 15 now. Genesis, G.D, and everything else I listened to soon after. I just found my Kansas CD, so obviously I'm blasting "Magnum Opus" on my CD player. God, how I love them.
Hope to get to know you guys soon! |
Welcome my dear child,

Welcome to the machine. You should check out some German bands such as Grobschnitt, Guru Guru, Novalis, Nue! Amon Duul II Octopus and Hoelderlin. Also check out Omega from Hungary. From Norway check out Ruphus and from Ireland FRUUP. See some of my reviews under my real name, Ian Gledhill in the collaborators section.
