David Surkamp with out a doubt. His vocal technique was just amazing particularly in "Song Dance" from "Pampered Menial". My other two "height" pushers would be Ian Gillan and David Byron. Amazing voices - I don't think any male vocalist today can compare with these guys

The highest voice in prog has to be Cedric Bixler Savalla from The Mars Volta.Leaves all others mentioned for dead.

David Surkamp.
I still remember the first time I heard PAmpered Menial, saying to my friend, "Wow that woman has an amazing voice". I almost fell off my chair when he replied, "yes and what's more amazing is it's not a woman it's a male". Twenty years later, PM is still one of my ten desert island albums. A true masterpiece. Favourite track is Theme From Subway Sue.

Although they aren't always considered prog...they aren't on this site...i think the lead singer of Coheed & Cambria takes the cake.
Gentle Giant also has its moments (So Sincere-from The Power and The Glory comes to mind)
OHHHHH..and the lead singer of A-Ha

Though he doesn't usually sing very high, Peter Gabriel can hit high notes too. I am yet to hear Surkamp.

Here I disagree,. if Peter was weak in something it was in high ranges.
Usually when singers don't reach high notes, they ask the band to lower down the tone or use cheap tricks as repeating words (Phil Collins did that) or cut the last word.
Instead of using low tricks Peter created that special semi yodel, that was a very efficient and intelligent way to make believe he could reach every high pitch and at the same time add drama to the lyrics.
About Surkamp, imagine Geddy Leee after breathing 5 helium balloons but with the exact technique of Edith Piaff, you can't fail.

The vocalist for The Mars Volta has been known to hit notes only a handful of males can on this planet, as high as the male voice has been known to reach. Tell me Geddy Lee can do that now, yeah right.

Precisely who I was gonna mention. He's BREATHTAKING. I love high male voices, personally. Testicle jokes, whatever, I DON'T CARE. I've been digging Pavlov's Dog a lot recently; the lush balladry and Surkamp's helium-induced, birdsong vibrato make a winning combination.

Boy, um, which ones? Could you provide time references or something?

David Byron hasn't been mentioned ...oh wait he has
I'm beginning to like Surkamp's voice as well. It has a funny Bugs Bunny quality to it.

There must be someone here who is musically qualified to identify the highest note sung on a prog record.
My money's still on Annie Haslam, but then females do have a slight advantage.

John Arch of early Fates Warning has a pretty crazy high voice.
Cedric of The Mars Volta is up there too.

That's because you haven't heard the others. If you had ever heard
Pavlov's Dog, you would never claim such a ridiculous thing. This is
NOT about taste, but simple physics. His voice can reach higher
frequencies than any other vocalist I've ever heard.

What about Daniel Gildenlow? Listen to the note he hits at the end of Used, can't get much higher than that as far as men go. However we forget quickly women sing prog too, so it's probably some woman.

I would have to back up that that comment by helofloki. If anyone has seen the Transatlantic DVD with him in it listen to where he sings in the harmony.
