I have my classical collection, and my more modern music seperate.
One case has my Classical composers and I have a few others for my rock/blues/prog/metal (anything other than classical to sum things up)
and in a few cd binders,I have my non classical music collection, I have it arranged alphabetically, and chronologically under each artist.
Its a bit too much to figure out out the dates for classical music, or I would do it that way as well.
people tell me i spend too much time organizing it because I spend time on the first day of every month reorganizing it because I'm always getting new albums

I sort mine by year, genre, alphabetically (by record label and artist), chronologically if the artist released more than one album that year.
I have OCD, this is nothing compared to how many times I wash my hands a day or how I have other things sorted.

Alphabetical by artist and chronological within that artists catalouge.
Without it I would never find the CD I'm looking for.

The way I have my CDs stored are inside four 92-CD Case Logic cases. I call them "Case I", "Case II" and so on, and the 1st case holds all the releases (CDs, as well as DVDs) and related works of my two favorite bands, Rush and Dream Theater, and that case is nearly filled.
The 2nd case I have is Genesis and Yes, with some related albums (two of Hackett's solo albums), as well as DVDs (mostly Genesis, don't have any Yes DVDs... Yet!).
The third case is my "InsideOut Case" really, because it has Transatlantic, The Flower Kings (and in the future, Stolt, Bodin, and Tangent releases when I get them), Spock's Beard (with Neal Morse, and other related solo works), and Ayreon (basically, Arjen Anthony Lucassen stuff when I get Ambeon, Star One and Stream of Passion albums). There's also IQ and Tiles, as well as Symphony X.
The fourth case I have is more varied, but includes: Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, King Crimson, ELP and Jethro Tull, as well as some Bela Fleck (Little Worlds) and The Who (Tommy and a 2-CD Greatest Hits). I also have some Queensryche, Pain of Salvation, Shadow Gallery and Opeth too.
It's a bit more by Genre and Artist than anything else.
-Marc.

I go alphabetical by artist, and then within the artist I sort the albums chronologically.

Sort? ![](smileys/smiley5.gif)
I have a 4 sided swivel stand that is 6' high. I also keep my DVD's in there. too. I am going to get the alphabetacly eventually once I get them all in there. I am writing a Database for the rest of the info. I don't like mp3's at all except to share something for review. I don't have I-pod and I guess it would be really hard for me to not have a physical package of material to accompany the music.

I convert them to mp3 and the machine allows me to "tag" them as I want. The "corpse" of the CD is thrown into one of the many huge cardboard boxes where I store them. For my most respected (and collected) artists, I have small boxes, very pretty, so as not to scare the visits (and my wife).
The cardboard boxes are hidden in several locations of my parents' house, my office... My appartment's not very big.

Erm, if I had the CD racks, which I don't, then it would be case of:
Genre specific: JamBands, Prog Rock, Blues, Jazz, Jazz/Fusion
So, within JamBands, would be:
Allman Brothers Band Derek Trucks Band Gov't Mule
And anything else that fits that genre. These are alphabetical by artist/band and then chronologically by album release.
But, it doesn't end there, I also do:
Association:
Peter Hammill The Long Hello Van der Graaf Generator
And possibly The Tangent, but maybe not... tough call, separate I think. But when I get some Po90, well, they'd be grouped with The Tangent and The Flower Kings too, once I have some.
Yes, I'm pretty anal about it.
But this isn't reality, my collection is mixed up and I cannot find anything, they're all piled on top of each other and some are in the car.

I used to sort alphabetically when I was young. I read High Fidelity by Nick Hornby and he said that sorting alphabetically was the most boring way of sorting your albums. I'd never thought that there was any other way of sorting. Now I sort by genre:
- Classic prog
- Prog metal
- Neo prog
- Psychedelic
- Pop
![](smileys/smiley17.gif)
- Metal
I like it this way. It makes it easier to choose what to listen to.
My neo prog collection is a bit small so I'll build on that one next.
