So many... I choose Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All along..." He turned an average song into a masterpeace.

Well, at least the majority of the votes were not in "other"

Yes- Yours is no Disgrace: Beautiful, especially on stereo. It changes a lot in its duration. Yessongs version is even wilder.

Yes - Starship Trooper: 2 guitar solos interacting with each other under the magnificent chord progression of Wurm

Yes - Close to the Edge : Jazz-fusion style!

Yes - Awaken: All solos are inspired and beautiful. (now I remember that I forgot "Perpetual Change" jazzy solo.)

Genesis - Firth of Fifth: Focused on melody rather than speed and skill. Great rhythm behind the guitar

Pink Floyd - Shine on You: minutes of gentle guitar soloing that inspired many musicians.

Pink Floyd - Comfortly Numb: Probably the best solos from Pink Floyd. Slow-tempo and melodic.

Money - There is amazing guitar soloing in here too under that 7/4 rhythm!

Led Zeppelin - How MAny More Times: Absolutely Phenomenal and powerful guitar solo playing a bit on the background since the electric guitar chords and drumming suffocate it a bit.

Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand: Both solos are extremely well done and interact very well with the drumming. The 2nd one has overdubs.

Led ZEppelin - Since I've Been Loving You: Almost all the song is inspired guitar playing. Great blues!

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven: Usually referred to as the best solo ever (as well as comfortably numb). Great electric guitar playing on an agression mode.

Led ZEppelin - I'm Gonna Crawl: Easily the best guitar solo since Achilles Last Stand. Probably Page's most emotional guitar solo.

Deep Purple - Rocking and loud extended guitar solo

The Flower Kings - In The Eyes of the World: There's a moment when the guitar flares up to the sky and plays amazing bent high notes.

Eagles - Hotel California: Gentle solo. One of the best soft guitar solos of all times.

Dream Theater- Metropolis I - Great solos! Although I realized Under a Glass Moon was a better choice.

Metallica - Fade to Black - I enjoy these solos so much that I made piano versions of them. Fast and melodic at points.

Metallica - MAster of Puppets - From an acoustic solo to a soft electric part. One of the best solos of heavy metal.

Guns and Roses - November Rain - The guitar playing in the coda is just too good.

Steve Howe - Mood for a Day - My guitar teacher from High School teaches his students this piece for a good reason: beautiful classical composition.

Spock's Beard - Harm's Way - Strange choice, but Alan Morse has never done a better solo in his career.

Van Halen - Eruption - Not my style, but this frenzied guitar piece is loved by many.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower - A cover well-done. Great guitar playing all-around with neat soloing from the guitar master.

I missed so many solos, I realized that this poll is kinda useless.

"To be Over" on Relayer.  Steve Howe is from another galaxy.

Of those listed, Firth of Fifth, but Hackett's solo on Every Day and Andy Latimer's solo on Lunar Sea are just as good. Also worth a mention are Bryan Josh's effort on Evergreen fron the Spirit of Autumn Past - a wonderful finale to a perfect song - and Steve Rothery's solo on Jigsaw.

A great solo in my mind is one that moves you emotionally whilst fitting the track it's in.

None of these songs come anywhere close to my top 100 favotire guitar solos. Not that they are bad or anything, I love all the songs on the list (with the exception of the Led Zeppelin and the Eagles) some much better guitarists are:

  • Steve Vai
  • Joe Satriani
  • Yngwie Malmsteen
  • Al DiMeola
  • Jason Becker
  • Vinnie Moore
  • Frank Zappa
  • Robert Fripp

I think my favorite guitar solo is probably The Reaper by Steve Vai his work is unreal.

Excellent taste.

And none of these solos come close to my favorites either.

Alex Lifeson's leadwork is pretty damn good...at least most of it.
