I don't think Rush or Tull are symphonic prog. You've listed two of their GREATEST albums but I wouldn't call either "Symphonic" prog
|
That surpises me to be honest.Thick As A brick is just about as symphonic as anything I've heard while Rush made four 'symphonic prog' albums with Caress Of Steel,2112,Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres.I don't except the 'prog metal' label for Rush.

for what it's worth I agree.... Tull may be listed here as 'folk-prog'
but I honestly see little folk in TaaB. The labels thing can be
taken too far.. this is an albums list not a group list anyway. As far
as Rush... I'll keep my opinions to myself but don't see any of their
albums anywhere near a top 10 list of symphonic albums... with all the
great albums that are out there that are CLEARLY symphonic in influence
and execution.

Acquiring The Taste is a fantastic album - frankly I'm surprised that there's hardly any Gentle Giant in these lists...
Mind you, if the term "Symphonic" was used correctly, there would be a lot of The Enid in there too - and probably some Barclay James Harvest...

Chad... don't take the absence of it (like from my list) as not liking
it. I think it is a great album... they all are for that matter,
I just think Octopus is the Gentle Giant album that could/should be in
a top 10 of symphonic prog albums.

Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures etc is 'art rock'.Rush have gone through several phases.Hard Rock,Symhonic Rock,Art Rock and back to hard rock again recently.
Thick As A Brick doesn't sound 'folky' to me at all.

Get "In The Region of the Summer Stars". It's the perfect blend of "Classical" and Rock - and I guarantee that it will knock the stars and stripes off your socks...

Max. of two albums per band:
1. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
2. Van Der Graaf Generator- Pawn Hearts
3. Gentle Giant- In a Glass House
4. Jethro Tull- A Passion Play (Not listed as symphonic, I know, but it certainly is symphonic)
5. Van Der Graaf Generator- Godbluff
6. King Crimson- Starless and Bible Black (Even though it's not really symphonic at all, but it's listed as it, so whatever...)
6. Gentle Giant- Three Friends
7. Yes- Relayer
9. Genesis- Foxtrot
10. Camel- The Snow Goose

1. Yes- Close to the Edge
2. Yes- Relayer
3. Genesis- Trespass
4. Van der Graaf Generator- Pawn Hearts
5. Genesis- Foxtrot
6. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
7. ELP- Pictures at an Exhibition
8. Van der Graaf Generator- H to He, Who am the Only One
9. ELP- Brain Salad Surgery
10. Yes- Going for the One.
As far as I'm concerned, Yes are the kings of symphonic prog, with Genesis and Vandy trailing shortly behind.
