My brain shortcircuits sometimes.. As one of my favourite pieces of music not just since 1990 but of all time, it obviously has to be "Amarok". Closely followed by "The Seven Letters From Tibet" by Tangerine Dream.

Within the generous framework you set, with no doubt for being influential and innovative has to be Jeff Buckley's Grace (10th Anniversary edition just issued) and followed by Nirvana's Nevermind, Radiohead coming in a distant third . Zooming-in on prog, Anekdoten'Nucleus, and to prog sub-division jazz rock,  McHacek's Featuring Ourselves and Conrad Schrenk's Extravaganza: Save The Robots.

Will no one mention Änglagård?

My choice is "Hybris" and "Epilog".

god thats a toughy. most of the classic prog bands had gone poor by this time but there are some great 90s onwards stuff.

heres some of the best:
dream theater - scenes from a memory
opeth - black water park
oceansize - effloresce
tool - lateralus

but the best would have to go to

the mars volta - deloused in the comatorium

it redefined prog rock and bought all the elements of the great prog bands from 60s and 70s back into the new millenium.

Here's a somewhat more complete list, in no particular order

Radiohead - The Bends (I actually prefer it to Ok Computer), Kid A, Hail to the Thief
Mogwai - Young Team, Happy Songs For Happy People
Tool - Aenima, Lateralus
Nirvana - In Utero (the hell with Nevermind)
Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
King Crimson - Thrak
Opeth - Blackwater Park, My Arms, Your Hearse
Anglagard - Epilog
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Fantomas - Fantomas
Bjork - Medulla
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Sigur Ros - ( )
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Liars - They Threw us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top

And that should just about sum it up.

I am amazed that Counterparts,Roll The Bones, Test For Echo and Vapor Trails have not been mentioned! Some of the albums mentioned in the above lists are very decent but IMHO are not fut to be mentioned in the same breath as those four opuses ( ok "OPERA" PETERWink.) Is this where the Rush backlash starts?

I came here and I said: "YAY, at last people who have no time for Radiohead; YAY, no more stupid debates on the Radiohead question!"

I suppose that I must say nothing because we are going to argue even much more than the abortion question!!

Hehe, don't worry.  I'm not one of those RYM people who worships the band and makes threads about how great they are every week.  I just thought "surely you're joking" was kind of an obnoxious thing to say, so I responded in kind.

I don't understand what the problem is with Radiohead - some of us like them, some don't. Fair enough.

I think they're one of the most progressive bands of the 1990s to date, and the fact remains that OK Computer is a landmark and very influential album, even if it's not to everyone's tastes.

At least we don't talk about Mariah Carey here...

Oh wait.

We do

Good list, Useful_Idiot - sometimes I prefer The Bends to OK Comp - although I like Nevermind for its sheer mindlessness

RADIOHEAD ARE NOT PROG!!!

they are a british rock band WITH OCCASIONAL PROG ELEMENTS!!!

they are one of my favourite bands ever and i have all their studio albums and some singles and bootlegs and they are one of the most influential bands since stuff like floyd.

but i just dont see them as prog.
