So true... he would force me to turn down the Pink Floyd all the time.  Now that he's gone... its the neighbors who plead with me to turn down the Floyd...

Sorry Emdiar, but that doesn't work all the time.  I'm sort of a music addict.  I prefer the music playing than the tv going. I play piano and drums, my mother played piano and my father was a bluegrass banjo player.  He could play one heck of a mouth harp also.  My son was raised on loads of good music.. ELP, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Yes (maybe I shouldn't of played so much Blue Oyster Cult when he was in the crib) but you know what I mean.

I gave him 4 years of guitar lessons...now I'm lucky if he can play Twinkle, Twinkle...and he can sing for you every song ELP had... and he knows Pink Floyd and Yes about the same... but when he was about 14, he decided he preferred Madonna and Janet Jackson.  Then at 16, it was techno...Now he still seems to prefer top 40 crap... Maybe its the gay thing... just not in his genes to like good music... (JK, gdub) What can a mother do???

Hi 3', the trick was not to say "listen to dad's records, aren't they great!", but to buy her her own cds, to play as and when she liked, to her dolls in her bedroom. That way her young ears became accustomed to good music long before any peer pressure could dissuade them. "Revolver" was my first LP. I bought it with my paper-round money when I was 9. This was in '76. It's still my favourite Fab Four album. It didn't do my musical taste any harm, so I figured it would be a good start for her.

Sure, from time to time we've had the Spice Girls years and such, which came, and thankfully went , but her love of great music has never wained.

On another note, my best friend at school, a complete prog head, and guitarist in my first prog band (we were 12!), managed to spend his entire school life completely untroubled by the opposite sex, which seemed strange as he was not a bad looking lad. At the age of twenty I introduced him to my future wife. After he'd left she said," He's lovely, but he so obviously fancies you."

After a few minutes of me laughing and telling her how stupid she was, and her saying how blind I was, I started thinking back on our 9 year friendship and little things which I hadn't taken much notice of at the time, slowly started to make sense. Things like, never forgetting my birthday and always buying me a thoughtfull, personal present. Not really typical schoolboy stuff.

I don't see much of him these days, we live in different countries, he's an audio-engineer mixing classical music. A couple of years ago he was in Amsterdam recording an important classical music event, so he came round for dinner. Half way through the evening he started speaking with a lisp, and praising the new Madonna album, but that's the closest he's ever come to "coming out" to me. I saw his Mom last christmas and she was moaning that he'd better hurry up and meet a nice girl, grandchildren for the making of. She obviously has no idea, though I did notice his dad roll his eyes, knowingly.

As he was a mega prog fan I must conclude that being gay does not preclude good musical taste.Big smile

'later, em.

We took my partners 8 year old son to one of the recent Rush gigs in London. He fell asleep!! Now, even if you find Rush boring and I know some of you probably do, how he slept through that noise is beyond me. Even the fire bombs at the start of 'One little victory' failed to wake him.

He commented afterwards that you couldn't dance to it because it kept changing and the songs went on too long, that why he fell asleep. He insists that Fatman Scoop is better than anything mummy listerns to..

No hope for him

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I always find it humorous that str8t guys always have this misconception that if a guy is gay he must be unbecoming. I 'll have you know that on average I would say gay men are more attractive than str8t men because we spend alot of time on our looks...have you EVER watched Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Gay men are VERY picky. These days because of my age and dimishing looks I am finding it hard to attract the guys like I used to. My women friends are always surprised by that and that is because women are more willing to accept a man's physical flaws than a gay man.

Response to Blacksword, three posts above this one:

Well, Blacksword, he's 8. What do you expect? He may find it on his own later. If he doesn't like prog by age 16, then you can say there's no hope for him...while he's under your roof. Most people would develop a taste for prog when they became mature, so 30 or so may be another target year. Don't give up.

I need as many people around my age with prog so I can start a band and not get booed off the stage... (On a side note: Has anyone ever had a progressive rock band and gotten booed? Where can you play where you don't get booed?)

Well Penguin... maybe you should start a Pink Floyd sounding prog band... PF seems to still draw a huge amount of teen fans to their music.

In discussions on this some time ago on another board, we concluded that prog bands that appeal more to the younger generation are basically guitar oriented.  Teens just don't seem to like the keyboard oriented prog bands.  And those with the beloved Hammond sound.. generally got left back in the 70s...

Look at the bright side...Faith No More actually HAS a keyboardist and they're not such a band band either...I have a couple FNM albums.

Hi Gdub, where did I say that? You've completely missed the point, which was that at 12 to 16 yrs old his gayness never crossed my mind, and therefore, considering he was "good looking", I found it strange that he didn't bother with girls. Had I known he was gay I wouldn't have found it stange. At no stage did I say "He wasn't bad looking, so I assumed he was staight."

I've got rather a lot of gay friends for a str8t guy, (I live in Amsterdam after all.) and they tease me that, as an unattainable str8t, they'd all just love to convert me.

Quote from "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", an English sit com;

Tom Farrell, (gay man), "What's the difference between a straight man and a gay man anyway?"

Linda La Hughes, (faghag),"About eleven pints of lager in my experience!"

Luckily, (or unluckily, depending on your point of view) I don't drink.

I think you ought to let your kids discover Prog for themselves instead of 'brainwashing' them at an early age. Personally I discovered Prog 9 yrs ago when I started going through my dads cd collection and there my first love was Yes. There will always be a place for them in my heart but others have taken over the top spot. I love finding out about obscure albums..running home and going ''dad..dad look what amazing cd i found today..'' lol. i still listen to stuff that aint prog..I enjoy going out dancing ..*the music aint terrific there but hey* , I appreciate some modern bands that try to play their instruments such as Muse and I do have my flaws..KoRn and Slipknot & FNM...stuff...but I have a burning passion for prog. So when i have kids...*god i perish the thought* lol I will let them listen to whatever grunge or punk is the new thing but will  expose them to the wonders of prog around 8 or 9 i think is good. Im grateful for my dad and sharing wonderful music with him its really a great bonding experience and im eternally grateful with my all my heart . So yeah let your kids listen to prog they will discover something unique and beautiful thats enchanting and amazing..

or more effectively tie them up and make them listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans..im sure it works.

heres me and my dad outside the carling academy ready to see Todd Rundgren.

On the way to dropping off my kids at school today, I played them "Long Time Suffering" by Spocks Beard, one of my son's favorites!  They frequently ask me to play "Witch Hunt" by Arena (which they know as "Exile").  Most days, however, my wife takes them to school, where they are forced () to listen to lite rock.  I keep trying!

As protective as I deem necessary, but she's pretty damn fussy, thank God. Smile

I have indoctrinated one child through nearly two hours of drive time and plenty of Prog on a daily basis. I took my wife to Cal-Prog and that really helped. Seeing bands play live really can change an opinion.

I have a bit of emdiar's problems as well. Thankfully, she's very picky too.
