Come to think of it, recently I bought an album by a relatively new Italian band, named Areknames. Not bad at all, VDGG inspired (vocals remind me of Hammill), but still very Italian sounding.

Hey! Must be good! How does it sounds like? Is it a recent band? What is their best record?

are you joking with me? I have a hard time telling sometimes, especially online.

if you're not, and really haven't heard them yet, I believe there is a sample on the band's page: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=213

...if you ask the resident proglords nicely maybe they'll even let you download a whole CD ("Forse le lucciole non si amano più", their only 'classic' album IMAO)

Classic 70s Italian prog, not as experimental as some, but full of warm melodies and my favorite prog vocals of all time.

Wonderful album, by Locanda Delle Fate. One of my favourite Italian albums.

PFM is my favourite Italian band. They got both the technique and the soul. I only like the 1st period though (Storia Di Un Minuto, and especially Per Un Amico and L'Isola Di Niente )

After the UK Seventies prog, the Italian progrock scene is my favorite one. My #1 band is Le Orme: varied and bombastic keyboards, melancholical vocals and warm acoustic guitars, an unique combination of emotion and technique! Felona e sorona is my favorite album.

Along the other masters (Banco, PFM), I like New Trolls (Searching for a land is great), Cherry Five (great Yes-inspired band with lots of Moogs), Men Of Lake (wonderful romantic atmosphere), Museo Rosenbach (Mellotron!), Standarte (Cursus and invocations is loaded with Hammond, Moog and Mellotron), Sensitiva Immagine (the Italian version of Selling..  from Genesis). I need a few more pages to express my love for the Italian prog .. FORZA ITALIA!!

PFM is my fave but it would have been nice to see a Maxophone listing.

Even though I'm italian I've always prefered british prog and actually don't know very well italian prog scene, anyway "Le Orme" have something which gives me the same emotion of english bands: I said emotions because in a more "celebral" compairing there's no match

Le Orme are great and my favourite italian band, within Premiata Forneria Marconi!

 ...On my to-buy-list!

These two bands are only the top of the iceberg of the italian scene...

Naturally the winning band is PFM. I love PFM. The first progressive song that I listen is a their song: E' Festa (Celebration in English version)
ELP!!!!!!!!

Le Orme is a close second especially for Felona e Sorona.

I must say I agree.

Nothing that PFM does gets tho the level of Darwin or Io Sono Nato Libero.

I also think that Locanda must be on  the list.
