Right now I'm listening Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the Live Arter Death album.

This trak is far more prog than what many icons of the genre did.

Do you even KNOW Shadow Gallery - Ghostship?

I hardly think he calls rime of the ancient mariner for the most progressive track of all time but afterall shadow gallery did not exsist in the 80's when prog metal emerged and they are hardly regarded as prog metal icons...they are far too new to be called icons IMO...besides they dont really seem to bring anything new to the genre...a VERY typical atribute for prog metal bands

I was about to say that.

Of course Shadow Gallery are an icon of Prog Metal. They have a very unique style, and they have proven to be consistent. And they are not a DT clone, most of their songs are not even similar to DT.

About Rime: It is not a progressive song. The music is really simple, and the only point is that the song is very long, which is mostly due to the spoken parts ... but the music itself is not different from the usual Maiden songs. If you compare that song to various contemporary prog metal bands like Fates Warning or even complex NWOBHM bands like Diamond Head etc., you'll see that it is not particularly innovative.

But of course I like the song ... but I prefer Ghostship in many ways.

The spoken  part is only like three minutes, the instrumental section is a couple of minutes, and the rest is mostly verses. There's a lot of different riffs and change ups in that song, even though many of the riffs sound similar. And even though it's all in the same time signature, there are some pretty big changes in BPM here and there.

I was reading this thread, and now I am annoyed....

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12232& amp;KW=iron+maiden&PN=0&TPN=6

They're not a prog metal band, but they are absolutely 100% prog related!

Steve Harris, the founder and leader of Iron Maiden, has cited Jethro Tull, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and Nektar as prog influences. Chris Squire and Geddy Lee are two of his biggest influences on bass. Bruce Dickinson has also cited Jethro Tull to be an influence on Maiden, both musically and lyrically. If you don't know how, then ask them. Nobody knows there music better than them, and I'll take their word for it.

They have touched prog metal with a lot of their work. Apart from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, there is Brave New World and Dance of Death, prog albums with symphonic touch, like Ed_The_Dead said in the other thread. Just listen to those albums, if you haven't already. The prog influence is obvious. I'd even say Brave New World is equally, if not, more prog than Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. There's Killers, a semi concept album. And there's Somewhere in Time, a semi concept album with synths. So they have prog tendencies, no doubt. Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Sign of the Cross, Alexander the Great, and Phantom of the Opera are other examples of that, songs with mutliple tempo and time signature changes.

Plus, they influenced some of the biggest prog metal acts, such as Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche (if they are even prog). So they are without prog related, in my mind. I mean, when you take a look at all the evidence, it's pretty much a fact. The only people who oppose them being considered as prog related are either people who don't like them or are scared that it will lead to more lesser prog bands being added to the site. But the gate already opened with the inclusion of the prog related section. That's the whole purpose of the section, so I don't see what's the problem about adding Maiden or even Metallica, for that matter.

Oh yes, and Lindsay Lohan must do the article for Maiden.

I don't think that Queensryche are Prog Metal from what I've heard (their 1st 3 albums).

To let Iron Maiden in would mean that we'd also have to let Judas Priest and 100 other very progressive and influential NWOBHM bands.

Can you imagine Ozzy Osbourne and Dio in PROG Archives?

It doesn't have to include all prog related bands, though. Just the ones that are the most important. I see what you mean, though. Maybe it's not a good idea after all. But Maiden are still prog related, whether they're on this site or not.

You got my point, I can't care very much for leght (I believe Musical Box is more Prog than many epics), but the changes and the clearly defined structure are what make the difference.

Plus way they worked the song is simply amazing for a metal band that didn't used keyboards.

I'm not saying is the most prog of all times (As someone said), but surely is more Prog than many things some 100% Prog bands did.

I totally agree that "Sad Wings of Destiny" is one of the most progressive metal albums from 1976 (and possibly right into the 1980s), and "Stained Class" is also very progressive. "Blizzard of Ozz" is probably more progressive than you might think too - Rhoades' playing is years ahead of it's time.

None of these are Prog Rock - but I really think that Prog Rock and Prog Metal are actually very different as genres - with different roots and musical attributes.

Which Queensryche albums would you say are prog?

Queensryche is probably considered prog because they did concept albums (and used keyboards). Musically, it's straightforward  heavy/power metal.

  • The Warning is prog as far as I'm concerned ... but that depends on whether you think that quirky technical albums are prog.
  • Operation Mindcrime has some progressive moments, but is ultimately "just" a brilliant melodic metal concept album.
  • Promised Land is their most progressive album IMO. But it also contains some songs which are not really prog (e.g. Lady Jane).

The Warning is progressive for metal, as far as I can hear - but I think that Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and particularly Metallica had more progressive material released at the same time. If Queensryche, why not Priest?

I'll check out "Promised Land" - I've already heard "Operation Mindcrime", and it's no real progression over "The Warning" to my ears.

What do you think of "Winter Kill" by Slauter Xstroyes? (There's an obscure one for you ).

Once more: What is prog? Confused

And, perforce, even more vague, what is "prog-related?"

These questions of additions are endless -- short of turning back the clock to eliminate all the non-classic/non widely-accepted prog artists that are here, the site should explicitly contain classic prog, and "other" (music of interest to prog fans), with all artists simply listed alphabetically.

If you don't believe a listed artist to be "prog," then voila! -- you can regard them as "other."

(Something like that, or the disputes will NEVER end.)Stern Smile

I know that's a radical solution, horza (and unlikely to happen -- people can't seem to agree on anything here), but aren't you becoming a bit sick of the endless "you must add this artist/is this prog?/they're not prog!/is metal prog?/is folk with electric instruments prog?/is jazz with rock influences prog? - debates and arguments?

I know I am, and short of re-naming the site, or doing something along the lines of what I've proposed above, this crap, and the agonizing over categories (not to mention the renaming of widely recognized categories, and the creation of new, imaginary ones) will never, ever, ever, EVER stop!Stern Smile
