Sym X is about 1000 times worse than DT.

Have to go for Dream Theater. Symphony X is pretty cool, but they can't hold a candle to the prior.

Symphony X rocks better and is equal in the vocal department but DT is more original and is hard to beat in the techinical ability issue.I think they are both great and I wish more American bands where like them.

Symphony X was my first progressive metal band. I listened to Dream
Theater and wondered what all the hype was about. Out of Dream
Theater's discography, I only like the Kevin Moore era, while I like
everything Symphony X has produced (though I haven't heard their debut).

James LaBrie < Russell Allen
John Petrucci == Michael Romeo (both are guitar virtuosos)
Jordan Rudess == Michael Pinnella (Rudess is better technically, but I prefer Pinnella's style)
John Myung == Michael LePond (I guess, I don't really pay much attention to bass honestly =P)
Mike Portnoy > Jason Rullo
Overall, I prefer Symphony X.

Best _______ vs _________ poll yet!!!!

Well, you know what I picked
|
Just out of curiosity: Why did you create this poll if you like neither of those two bands?
|
Well, thats becouse I feel that Ive always been hard on prog-metal fans and I feel that I should atleast do something for them becouse even though our definitions of prog may differ, we still consider ourselves prog lovers and that my friend is what counts. In the end we are all the same no matter what genre of prog one prefers and trust me if there were ever a debate on other musical forms(Rap, pop, etc) we will all be fighting on the same side.

hey bro! nice!
both bands are great! i picked both!!!!
have all their sutdio, live albums and bootlegs.... sweet!

obviously dreamtheater

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Progmetal isn't my kind of prog (except for avant-progmetal like Fantômas)

Dream Theater are quite good. Nice musicians except James LaBrie (I think he's quite ennerving) but Symphony X are far better in my opinion.
Symphony X are incredible good song writers and they know when to stop and they hold back then. Dream Theater exhausts everything to much very often. It comes across as if their only aim ist time and speed in many songs, anyhow they are really good but not as good as Symphony X.
Technically they are both on the same level although I prefer Michael Romeo's and Michael Pinnella's style cause it's not just about speed (Dream Theater are also not all about speed but very often in fact).

DT all the way. They were the first metal band i got into as well as Prog Metal. Symphony X is jsut too mainstream sounding in my opinion. Plus DT has Portnoy and Petrucci! Tremendous amount of skill. |
What about Rudess?
My first Prog Metal experience was also DT. I also do not find what is so mainstream in Symphony X. There're some songs which indeed are a bit mainstreamish, yet, there is the same thing in DT.

As much as I like Symphony X I have to say Dream Theatre, easily. I dont think any prog-metal band can come close to DT, early DT anyway

That's totally wrong. Rusell Allen has a better lower range than James that is about it. James LaBrie has much more high range, much better sustain, and much better enunciation. James LaBrie dosen't have the bad gruff overtones that Russell Allen has. James LaBrie is a very versitile vocalist and fits all of his bands perfectly. I can't picture anyone else as a proper singer for Dream Theater.

Russell Allen has a greater range than James LaBrie...
Listen to "Lady of the Snow" or "Candlelight Fantasia"
and then to "Inferno" or "Incantations of the Apprentice". And I now not that much singers who can hold a tone that long like Russell Allen... He has much more sustain than James LaBrie will ever have and furthermore Russell Allen sings much more soulful, feeling and much more pleasant.
