^ I actually don't see Nothingface (an album I like too) in Wikipedia's 1989 Prog timeline page (from whence these choices appear): See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_progressive_rock_(1980–1989)#1989

My favourite studio albums there are After Dinner's Paradise of Replica and Thinking Plague's in This Life.

Also no Savatage which made huge step forward in song-writing & performance with their 1989 album Gutter Ballet. 

At least whoever made that wiki list did not forget about Fates Warning.

Thanks, Greg, I haven't really realized that Paul in these series of polls is following Wikipedia's Progressive Rock timeline.

I've only given a 1-star rating to one Frank Zappa album so far and that was Jazz from Hell. The title says it all really. Tongue

Well, I wouldn't say either that you've underrated Part One, but about Voivod I'd like to tell you, I find Nothingface quite a lot more accessible than Dimension Hatross, even probably still too hard-edged and dissonant for you - I guess.

It depends, i don't know how you are with heavy metal, US power or progressive metal. But if you like a bit of that, start with the albums with Ray Alder on vocals. Their earlier work is more heavy metal, US Power, with some Iron maiden influences (their first two albums). Their first vocalist John Arch is a bit of an acquired taste, try the 1986 album Awaken The Guardian. If you like that, you'll enjoy everything else with Arch on vocals. 
Also many years after he was out of FW, John Arch reunited with FW guitarist John Matheos and they did two albums together.

Knowing what you like, I would say that either Perfect Symmetry (89) or Parallels (91) would be a good place to start; they are arguably the most accessible. 

APSOG was always my favourite; it's the most progressive, certainly..

Actually, I find Part One quite spooky too, and it took some listenings before I really could like it.

Btw, it's interesting to get acquainted with Wikipedia's Progressive Rock timeline.

'89 timeline is also missing Gretchen Goes to Nebraska by King's X, which is my all time favorite of theirs. Will vote for Out of the Silent Planet here.
