Anything by Gazpacho . The singer sounds like he is about to burst into tears at any moment.

There can be a number of reasons to cut a stranger online asking for reccomendations some slack. The simple part is knowing what's not being asked for. In this context I think I'll have a better chance hitting the mark with someone singing:

I prophesy disaster
And then I count the cost
I shine but, shining, dying
I know that I am almost lost

Well of course I had to have one – in fact I ordered three
So I could watch the golf girl, could see she fancied me
And later on the golf course after drinking tea
It started raining golf balls and she protected me

I think its better to tell you something about me. As i said, i am a simple moldovian teenager 15 years old, but my native language is russian. The main trouble for me is that i like the concept of prog rock, but when i try to listen some "classic" prog albums, i understand, that it really doesnt fit my soul, thats not my vibe. you know, the british/american/other european "depressing" music is much more happier then the russian "happy" music LOL. And i try to find something. Thats why i created my post. It will be better if i post some examples of "vibe" i like, from english and russian (in the descriptions of russian songs there are lyrics, just copy it to google translate. i checked, the translation isnt very bad).

There are some of them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjMwdL5WtFc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88g_wyUiBZU

dont pay much attention to genre of those songs.

My question at this point...
Are you thinking more about the lyrics being depressing, or the tone of the music, or is it just a combination of the both? What if a tune 'sounds' depressing but the lyrics are about unicorns spreading love?

combination. i think every of those things is important to create the depressing atmosphere. but i dont understand english by ear very well, so, it can be even about unicorns.

California by Mr. Bungle is very uncharacteristically downtrodden musically and lyrically for a band primarily known for its over-the-top goofiness. It really sounds like a band mourning its imminent demise.

Quite a bit of early Barclay James Harvest has this vibe; 'Song for Dying' and 'Happy old world' on 'Once again' are good examples.. Some of the Moody Blues material (Childrens childrens children, Seventh Sojourn) has a sad, wistful, keening quality about as do tracks like 'A Salty Dog' by Procol Harum.. which is why Nick Cave was so into it.

Great answer !
I feel the same way when I listen to foreign language songs. I catch about 1 in 200 words which I may have heard somewhere before, but it is the the timbre of the voice and the cords and keys that the music is performed in that has the most meaning to me. I will, from time to time try and find, or through the google machine, translate lyrics to know what the song is about.

Il Bacio Della Medusa (Italy) - "Discesa agl'Inferi d'un Giovane Amante" (2008).

No need to understand Italian to feel the atmosphere. Just listen to.

Surprised we've not had these two yet!!

And you could also try 'People Who Eat Darkness ' and Drive Home', also by Steven Wislon. All are enhanced by the brilliant Jess Cope films.

I would find it easier to reccomend you some non-prog, but I think you should check out that Godspeed You! Black Emperor (and the band in general) track - which has very little in common with the classic prog that doesn't fit your soul.

Speaking of soul, Lingua Ignota - Sinner Get Ready has crushed mine:

Interesting you should post these Steven Wilson tracks and videos. I find them emotional, especially the raven one but not depressing.

Listen to some soft goth and goth metal instead if you really want to get sad.

Try Bathory, Sopor Aeturnus and London After Midnight.

Is the OP out there??

Anyway, Sylvan - Posthumous Silence is quite depressing and has zero avant sprinkles.

In my world, Tom Waits is about as progressive as you can get. Beyond progressive, and into some strange netherworld. Oh, and you won't ever find an uplifting, happy or optimistic song in the lot.

Frank's Wild Years (from Swordfishtrombones)

Well Frank settled down in the Valley
And he hung his wild years
On a nail that he drove through
His wife's forehead

He sold used office furniture
Out there on San Fernando Road
And assumed a $30,000 loan
On a little two bedroom place

His wife was a spent peice of used jet trash
Made good bloody marys
Kept her mouth shut most of the time
Had a little Chihuahua named Carlos
That had some kind of skin disease
And was totally blind

They had a thoroughly modern kitchen
Self-cleaning oven (the whole bit)
Frank drove a little sedan
They were so happy

One night Frank was on his way home
From work, stopped at the liqour store
Picked up a couple of Mickey's Big Mouths
Drank 'em in the car on his way
To the Shell station, he got a gallon of
Gas in a can, drove home, doused
Everything in the house, torched it
Parked across the street laughing

Watching it burn, all Halloween
Orange and chimney red then
Frank put on a top forty station
Got on the Hollywood Freeway
Headed north

Never could stand that dog

...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...
