I somehow lost this from my radar and only listened to the Faust track now. I'm not keen on the singer and the drums, but the rest is glorious Eloy sound. There's something to enjoy for sure, even though overall it won't be a big favourite.

I also listened to Detlev's Last Planet album again. His voice is a pain, but much of the album is instrumental, and the music is good, even very good in places.

^ If/when I find the courage, I will listen to the Faust album again. If I still think it is very bad, I can send you the cd, if you wish...
It is in that period that Eloy lost me a bit; Ra still had some good moments, but I found Destination rather cringe-worthy. Of what I've heard of their later work I only think Ocean 2 is worth while. I listened to the two Jeanne d'Arc albums, but in my opinion they're a lot worse than Destination...

You don't like either volume of The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre? I think they're great. Eloy's done quite well since regrouping with their Chronicles set in '93.

^ Alas, I don't like either. It is interesting you refer to the Chronicles set, because it is maybe illustrative of the change of the Eloy sound: I prefer the originals much more to these re-recordings/remixes. This change of sound started, maybe, with Metromania and, in my opinion, got only worse on the subsequent albums. From the warm symphonic and spacey sound it became, more robotic/computerized, calculated and without soul... Which is just my personal appreciation of course.

Nothing beats the originals, but Eloy was more successful at those re-recordings than many other bands have been with theirs (looking at you, Tangerine Dream).

My favorite album is probably Colours, but I love the albums that immediately follow, especially when they had dual keyboard players for certain songs.

I'm with Kees on this one; Performance and Metromania are decent, but I already find Ra quite cringeworthy. To be honest, I never even listened to Destination. From The Tides... onwards they sound good again in my ears (it's mainly sound choices that ruin Ra) but I think the creativity has waned, I just find too little that enthuses me on these albums on the composition side. I'd probably also nominate Colours as my favourite album, and Planets/Time to Turn are pretty much up there. I think I'd take Schmidtchen's album and for sure Ego on the Rocks over anything Eloy did after and maybe including Metromania. I may not appreciate Faust as a whole either, but I do appreciate Matze's signature style pretty much everywhere, also the instrumental contributions of the others.

Ra is by consensus Eloy's nadir.

I'd agree with you. But as nadirs by established artists go, it's far from being the worst.

That's a different discussion. But, yes, I agree. Wink

re ELOY, yep agree with a lot said. The recent Joan Of Arc albums are excellent but their creative peak is Colours to Time To Turn imo. I well remember the BBC taking a big interest at that time and that helped build them a small but enthusiastic fan base in the UK. Before that they were hardly known here although Ocean is generally their most highly regarded album in prog circles for sure.
