That edition was quite a challenge, and for various reasons. One of them was that the track that I initially wanted to share was way too long (+/- 16 min), precisely because it included plenty of field recordings. The album was released back in 1972 but it has been re-released in 2013 with a shorter version of the respective track. Unfortunately it was not available on-line at the time. But miracles do happen sometimes. Thanks to the revisitation of the interactive poll history, I realized that someone had meanwhile uploaded the new, shorter version to youtube.

It is a piece by French jazz legend Barney Wilen. In 1970 he assembled a team of filmmakers, technicians and musicians to travel to Africa for the purpose of recording the music of the native pygmy tribes. Upon returning to Paris two years later he created the album "Moshi", an eccentric effort fusing avant jazz sensibilities with African rhythms, ambient sound effects and melodies rooted in American blues traditions. Cut with French and African players, this is music with few precedents or followers, spanning from extraterrestrial dissonance to earthbound, street-legal funk. Enjoy! Oh, and btw the track lasts about 6 min, so no worries about that. LOL

Barney Wilen: Moshi (Too)

I might add a few more tracks later but basically I assume that this will be my nomination, given that I have not yet participated in so many polls. It makes little sense to bring up not nominated songs from recent polls.

Well, upon second thought, this is very easy... I turned her a bit into a gimmick in some of these polls, but I never  nominated her. Shame on me! Sorry Nena, I love you, you still make me feel 15 again...
NENA... NENA... NENA !

Strangely (Ermm), I never had a poster of her above my bed... I think I already had some Roger Dean works on my walls. Poor sod... All those missed opportunities... Unhappy
The first time I brought her up, I think, was in the dreadful decade poll, with this track.

Nena - Satellitenstadt:

Been fun looking back at some of these. So, I was thinking back on what I passed on finally nominating, I noticed that I had several pieces suggested but not nominated with Indian musicians and/or musical influences. I have had a long interest in Indian culture. Two of my best friends from high school are Indian. Of late, I have had an interest in Indian influenced cooking, making some curries and chutneys. I also work with different production teams in India.

So, bringing these back up.

From Interactive Poll #16, I had put up some covers of the Guns N' Roses song "Sweet Child O' Mine" and then ended up going in another direction.

This next one I like for the video as much as the Indian-fusion instrumental take. The video offers a window into another part of the world that I am not familiar with and I really enjoyed watching. And, there's no sitar.

Then from the Eternal Wondering of an Interactive Poll (the samsara poll).

Then I had two in the Sounds of Asia poll, but then turned to Korea.

Starting with Indian music, first up (and my nomination for now) is a band based in Tampa, Florida. I used to live down there, and one night, I was driving around, running errands, and listening to a local community radio station and the DJ (Ray Villadonga) was playing an assortment of jazz rock fusion, psychedelic, space, and prog rock. One of the tracks was from a band that he cofounded and played bass for, Wahh World Fusion Band. The band primarily consists of a tabla player/vocalist, bassist, guitarist, e-sitarist, and drummer. I couldn’t find any individual tracks from their first album on Youtube, so this one is from their second album, called “Brother Ray,” in honor of Ray. Ray passed away from cancer in 2017 prior to the release of this album and he only played on a few of the tracks. I don’t think he is on this one. The end of the track has some konnakol.

Wahh  World Fusion Band – Desire on Fire

If interested, their first album “Liberation” is available as a free MP3 download from their website. Click on the “get album” link on the page.

Second up, the primary listed artist is one I have mentioned before in these polls, fusion bass player Jonas Hellborg. He is on PA and has collaborated with many artists. My previous nomination from him was a collaboration with guitarist Buckethead and drummer Michael Shrieve. This one has him collaborating with guitarist Shawn Lane and Indian musicians (and brothers) V. Umashankar (ghatam and konnakol), V. Selvaganesh (kanjira and konnakol), and V. Umamahesh (vocals).

Jonas Hellborg / Shawn Lane / V. Umashankar / V. Selvaganesh / V. Umamahesh – Anchor

kanjira:

And finally, in Interactive Poll #-50: Lesser Known Prog.

Thank you all for your contributions. We have at least three more full days for contributions, and I do hope some more people decide to take the challenge, be they ones who have participated in past Interactive polls and/or ones who have not. It requires some effort, as do all Interactive Polls but being so open, I don't think it should be that much of a challenge for anyone at the forum.

I have been actively compiling the suggestions into a playlist, here is the link again in case anyone missed it the first time:

@Greg, do you want me to add this to my first post?

Here is another contribution from me.

That was before my time but had I participated in this poll I might have considered a soundtrack by Eleni Karaindrou who wrote the music for most films by Theo Angelopoulos. This is a piece from "The Beekeeper" (Part 2 of his Triology of Silence) where she collaborated with various musicians. Here you can hear Eleni on piano and Jan Garbarek on sax. Enjoy!

Thanks Kees and Mila for listing more.  I like the contrast between those two.

Mila, no need to add it to your first post. :)

This could actually be one of the most interesting polls but you have to invest a little time. I have joined the interactive polls not so long ago but I found a way to participate still. I have to admit that at first I felt a bit intimidated by your lengthy intro but I guess that's just me. lol But thank you for adding the full poll history, much appreciated! Smile

Thanks Mila.

As is common with me, I wrote it in a way that makes it seem more complicated and harder than it is (a kind of self-parody).  The list and the descriptions to go with those was bound to be long and was what took the most time to prepare, but the rest could have been much more concise.

I could have just said (or less, but I don't like to seem terse):

Welcome all to this edition of the Interactive Polls where we get the chance to visit and re-visit old Interactive polls (see list at bottom).  This is open to those who have participated in past polls and those who have not.  The Interactive Polls has a long history and so there is much to be inspired by.  You may have some regrets that you didn't choose X for a past poll, hadn't participated etc.

When mentioning tracks for the topic consider these criteria:

a) You can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that you had mentioned but not nominated in an earlier Interactive Poll.
b) You can bring up a track or tracks for potential nomination that you wished (or now wish) that you had thought of for an earlier Interactive poll, or one that you had thought of but didn't mention (possibly due to restrictions on the number of allowed song suggestions).
c) You can mention a track or tracks for potential nomination that would have fit an earlier Interactive poll that you did not participate in.

Expectations:

1. Mention as many as you like, but let us know which past polls those tracks you mention are related to and please demonstrate which criteria (a, b, c above) they each fit.
2.  Please write the song and artist name and provide a video embed or hyperlink to the music so that we all can easily listen to and find it.
3. By Wednesday or Thursday next week you will be expected to have nominated one to be included in this poll.
4. After that, you will be expected to listen to all of the nominations for this poll and then vote for and list your three favourites (not your own).

Special consideration:

If you do not wish to  or have the time to listen to other people's choices and vote in the poll, then you can still mention music.  Just let me know that it is not for official nomination.  Those choices might be added to a special bonus section of the poll where people who are voting for three of the official nominees optionally also can vote for one bonus option (three official nominations plus one bonus). No voting for your own bonus, that would be bone-headed.  NOTE: Only one bonus per person for the poll, so specify which is the bonus nomination should you be one that doesn't have an official nomination.

Now here is the list to consider for your nominations.  Happy hunting!
...
Here are my suggestions as examples.

Or something like that. Wink

OK, a last one I want to bring forward is one that was apparently appreciated, but that I didn't nominate, because it was up to two other masterpieces by Kreng (in the It Goes On and On poll). But it is still one of my personally most appreciated pieces of music I've been putting forward in these IA-polls.

Kaboom Karavan - Roadmap:

My nomination will still be Nena, though. I'm afraid she wouldn't forgive me if I wouldn't nominate her this time... And somehow... Oh gosh, I wished I'd still be 15...
(also because I will be off again for a couple of days...)

@ Greg, given that we are not that many, what about allowing 2 nominations per participant?

And yeah, it would be helpful if everyone would tell us for which poll they considered their contributions.

I thought about suggesting the same before, then didn’t for some reason. I very much like the idea of two nominations per person.

@Greg, yes I think that would not only do justice to this poll but to the Interactive Polls in general. Our head chief, Lorenzo has only posted one song so far, though. Tongue

Yes, thanks for suggesting this, Mila.  I have PMed Lorenzo asking if he would like to mention and nominate one more.  I do think his current one selection is excellent.

My current two nominations now would be
Ennio Morricone - L'arena
Portishead - The Rip

I may think of others....

Yes, Greg, with pleasure.

Interactive Poll: Sounds of Asia

This was the very first poll that I've hosted. So even though that was not so long ago this poll has a special meaning to me. I had plenty of material to share and I liked all of my suggestions equally. But since we had quite a few East Asian tracks in competition at the time I decided to nominate one of my other two options. This piece is from a Japanese video game soundtrack.

Kikuo ft. Hanatan: The Girl Who Sells Missfortune

My nominations will be:

1. Barney Wilen: Moshi (Too) > Field Recordings poll.
2. Kikuo ft. Hanatan: The Girl Who Sells Missfortune (jap. Fukoya No Musume)
