Some more drum theatre from Dream Theater who are looking for a new drummer, following the recent departure of long-time DT drummer Mike Portnoy, who was reportedly hospitalised for two days with nervous exhaustion at the end of a gruelling world tour. Ouch

Hi,

Probably one of my favorite drummers, if I had to choose, and the one I would select for my band, since Jaki is no longer available for us. I also (specifically) like what he says about drumming at times, even though it might sound like he is stoned or drunk. "I don't play rhythm or with the bass! I play with the guitar!" ... and I'm not sure that many folks even get it, when you are taught in schools to stay with the bass player and make sure that the bottom end is good and proper ... like saying that Mani's never was!

As I like to say ... it's about the MUSIC and if you are not ready to break the rules, you won't go far! (You'll be just like everyone else!)

The posts examples:

Wow ... that Mike Terrana is far out ... would love to see some of the "great" drummers in rock music even try something like that, because all they know is count and hit the snare drum! They could not define or create something like that!

Manoel Batera is neat ... I had seen some folks in Harlem that were pretty damn good drummers, and never used a conventional setup but man could they enhance the words and music! These guys tend to make drumming schools look really stupid even though this kid was evidently taught to play within a conventional context.

The only hard thing about all this is that we don't really have a clear understanding of what Bonzo did, or what Moonie did, so we could show it. It's what they did, and how it helped the specific moment in the music they were doing! That is way more important than "keeping" time! Many folks talk about it on the pig (toob!) but really, it's not the same thing ... folks still can't color their music like they did. Also valuable and not always given the credit, Ringo was pretty good at accents and simple stuff that helped a lot of the music he played in those early days. You could say it was way too economical drumming, but it was effective.

This one always blows me away. Omar Hakim with Sting. If you don't want to see the whole thing skip to around 3:30 where Omar absolutely cuts loose.

Has anyone mentioned Terry Bozzio yet? I think he was meant to be a serial killer, but turned out to be a drummer instead. Star He is still great. And looks even more like a psychopath, hahah.

...

Hi,

You mean the kid with all that stuff around him that he won't even get to use? He was fun to watch, but I'm not sure he was that great, but definitely enjoyable ... at least by his expressions to the camera all the time, that makes you laugh ... !!!

I used to be in a band with one of the best bass guitar players in Turkey, wo receives loads of praises from the foreign musicians and music listeners too. He is mainly a jazz musician, but can play in virtually any style. He is a virtuoso. One of his favourite drummers is Terry Bozzio. He calls his playing "sick" (as a compliment). Perhaps some mashed kiddos can learn something from that, but...

If you follow my Train of Thought, the last Dream Theater album I've listened to is Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009), so I've just Awakened to the fact that in A Dramatic Turn of Events, they now have new drummer Mike Mangini in the band. Smile

At least I'm not as behind with the times as I was with Marillion, where I recently discovered they now have "new" singer Steve Hogarth in the band. Tongue

The band's name will get censored here on PA, but check out sl*g.rij van Kampen, a Dutch percussion group. Their shows are fantastic!
