As this is a Prog Music Lounge forum rather than General Music Discussions, then one might well expect "Prog".

David mentioned it, but David Bowie's Blackstar is the obvious choice for me irregardless of its Prog quotient. As a fairly experimental art rock album (actually it's a fairly conservative album but I really appreciate the mellow jazzy electronic ambiance as well as its funereal atmosphere), it wouldn't be out of place in Crossover Prog to me anyway (of course we lack the ability to label albums in the database a la rateyourmusic etc. and are stuck with placing whole discographies under one category), and it was the Prog Archives collaborators’ top album of 2016. Blackstar is an amazing swansong, and should I still be alive in 25 years, I expect that this is the one that I will most remember from the 2010's. It helps that Bowie has been important to me for most of my life, and I miss him dearly despite never having met him (much like with Douglas Adams, I felt a great loss when he died, and I feel much the same way about Christopher Hitchens...).

Other favourites include the Kosmischer Läufer albums -- now that is how you do retro (elaborate backstory and all). And frankly, he may be best known as a comedic actor, but I love Matt Berry's albums. Berry's Kill the Wolf is definitely a contender for me.

In case "album" include live it would be:
King Crimsons: Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind

Otherwise:
Between the Buried and Me: Coma Ecliptic

Reve Générale - Howl

Africa Express - In C

Reve Générale is a great album, one of my favourites from 2015. Now the other two I have not heard, so on the list they go - thanks man.

I'll put you down for Blackstar, then. It's plenty progressive enough for me and a remarkable album even regardless of who made it and why (...which only go to make it more remarkable).

Digging the Matt Berry track - I hadn't heard any of his music before. Are you by any chance a fan of Wolf People? If not then their album Fain is something you might want to check out.

Kosmischer Läufer - another group for me to hear Thumbs Up

Any kind of album is fine (other than compilations or archival releases, I think) so no problem with Radical Action being your pick Thumbs Up

Coma Ecliptic I will need to hear.

I think Wolf People was recommended to me, or mentioned, once before after I mentioned Kill the Wolf (by Dr Wu perhaps?). I checked out WP music, and really liked it, but still don;t have the albums. Listening again and enjoying it very much. Thanks for the reminder.

As for Kosmischer Läufer, it's electronic/ Kosmische and is the product and project of one person (from Scotland I think). I did a topic on this and related sort of endeavors, but unfortunately perhaps it was too arcane/ special interest to get any response at this site. See Retro-Music Pretending to be of the Past (CLICK)

I love this (I'm very into such electronic music):

I think it was brilliantly conceived and executed, the story and music of Kosmischer Läufer I mean, not my topic. Most of those faux backstory type of albums (albums pretending to be of the past) that I know of are in the folk horror fake soundtrack realm. I'd like to do one for The Wicker Basket Man.

Well one though it came out in 2009 was IQ Frequency  and the other from 2011 was Wobbler Rites at Dawn.
I rarely buy new bands releases so those are about as new as it gets for me.
I would also add that Crimson live one Radical Action....
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Qualifiers
Swans - The Seer vs. Swans - To Be Kind. Can only have one Swans album in the semis. The Seer is most iconic but has some bits and pieces that I can't listen to that well.
Radian - On Dark Silent Off vs. David Bowie - Blackstar. Very unequal pairing. Radian wins it today.
Art Zoyd - Phase V vs. Sohrab - A Hidden Place. The two most out there avantgarde albums. Art Zoyd with a brilliant five CD boxset but Sohrab has just made the perfect avant-electronic album.
Semifinal
Swans - To Be Kind vs. Radian - On Dark Silent Off. Majestic Swans edge out Radian, just about.
Sohrab - A Hidden Place vs.  North Sea Radio Orchestra - I a Moon. I a Moon probably the album of the decade I spin most, but Sohrab will win it today, I'm in Sohrab mood.
Final
Sohrab - A Hidden Place vs. Swans - To Be Kind. Sohrab has a meditative quality that is just unmatched.
Winner
Sohrab - A Hidden Place. Not listed on progarchives, Tough luck. All seven are very hard to not declare winners.

(Embedding the video here doesn't seem to work.)

Edit: I added the Swans qualifier, because I genuinely thought about which of the two Swans albums before doing the rest of the tournament, so this is just how the decision went.

I enjoyed the tournament! Since football and other sports will probably be cancelled shortly we must invent our own...

I haven't heard the Sohrab, or several others here. More morsels to come for my listening pleasure.

When this thread has run its course I will do a list of everyone's picks for the convenience of the casual reader. So far no duplicate choices, which is a pleasant surprise.

According to PA, the #1 album of the decade is Wobbler's From Silence to Somewhere, #2 is All Traps on Earth - A Drop of Light, and #3 and #4 are Steve Wilson.

My perusal of the top 100 sees many great albums, but I think I have to go with Big Big Train's English Electric (Part 1) and/or (Part 2).
