So I'm acclimating myself with Mars Volta, Anathema, Tiamat, and Porcupine Tree, formally beginning with their albums in chronological order. So far I hate all of these early records, which are either poorly conceived sound collages, stupid f**king black metal garbage, or Comatorium, which is actually quite nice.
Once you pass On the Sunday of Life, Porcupine Tree gets really good. Up the Downstair is a favorite of mine.

I was always afraid of getting into Eloy, besides, I'm done with the 1970's for right now. You listen to eight Carole King albums in a row and you start wishing for holocaust.

I liked Up the Downstair, but it didn't hit me too hard. Synthesia sounded good, and Small Fish had a nice pow to it, but I could have cared less for his nearly monotonous, pseudo-alternative robo-humanoid whining.
