Ah, the Nolan Nod. I'll take it. Probably better than the Tarantino Nod that Star Trek was planning. Edited by Atavachron - August 12 2021 at 16:16 |

^ Oh it needs an edge alright, but I don't know if Tarantino's particular coils and convolutions would work. It sounds like he wants to reimagine the classic TOS episode A Piece of the Action. We almost had Chris Pine directing... that would've been a mistake.

Just saw Titane, the Golden Palm (Palme d'or) of the latest Cannes film festival, by Julia Ducournau. The pitch: Following a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the
son who has been missing for 10 years. Titane : A metal highly resistant
to heat and corrosion, with high tensile strength alloys. A film that meets lots of extreme criticism: either very ecstatic or very dismissive. Well, I'm somewhere in the middle. It is not as original as some critics pretend it is - that rather shows their lack of cinema culture, imo. Some find the violence too explicit, but most is just very well suggested by the cinematographic means. Others complain that the story is not credible, probably expecting something more realist (but is Alice in Wonderland credible from a realist viewpoint?)... Anyway, the film starts of in a kind of Cronenberg trashy way (think of Crash), which could create expectations for the rest of the film. This is the violent part, and it sometimes verges on the grotesque, but it is very well staged and filmed and edited, so it is quite convincing, also thanks to the acting of the main character (played by Agathe Rousselle). But this is just a long intro to the heart of the story which begins when Vincent Lindon enters the story. Here the film becomes much more conventional in its narration, which is not to say that the story is conventional: it is quite original, but it's base is rather conventional - some elements are surprising but other are very predictable. All in all, it is an entertaining and good film, but in my eyes not a masterpiece (but compared to what French cinema has produced these last decades it is indeed much more original than most of these navel-gazing and talkative films). |

6 Souls (2010) - Started out like a psychological thriller, and then veered into the supernatural domains. It was a decent one. And I did something I very rarely do: tried to predict the ending. I hit the bullseye, as usual. 7.5/10

Labyrinth with Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. I have watched it many, many times, but I still can't decide what to think of it. First of all, the story is rather messy, and there are many things that don't really make sense. Also, the film is pointing in many different directions: goblins, fairy-tale creatures, pythonesque humor and Gothic undertones. You often get the impression, that people in the crew were working on different films at the same time. The visual effects are also very over-the-top, and all in all the film is pretty camp. On the other hand, I have found myself watching it again, so it must have something. In the end it is probably just a guilty pleasure.

House of 9 (2005) - Nothing even slightly interesting happened in the movie. Hard to believe. A proper plot must be like an amazing, or at the very least interesting day of one. This was like one proclaims that, a day in which s/he sits at home and watches TV all day, is the best day of his/her life. What cannot be forgiven is that, they didn't try to be interesting, seemingly. BTW, there are lots of crazy things happening in the movie, mine was an analogy. The plot lacked even a touch of an average intelligence. The ending might be excluded. It was sick, but not in a genius way. 2/10

The Bay (2012) - A "horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"or movie, for sure. (Horlamak means snoring in Turkish, and "hor" is its onomatopoeic word.)
While I was not sleeping and "horrrr"ing, I witnessed some ludicrous jump scare scenes. They really made me wide awake, followed by my hysterical laughters. This was not a bad movie at all, perhaps awesome for some. I'll rate it with 6/10, precisely because it was a quality film. Just, not my thing. |

Joshua (2007) - Anything I may say about its plot would be a spoiler. I'm giving lots of spoilers in here, but I prefer not to, now. I think in such a movie, a baby actor shouldn't be included. It is an extralegal point, and a humanitarian concern of mine. The child actor acted very impressively. His musical talent also stands out.
A good movie: 7.5/10 |

It looks like it's the same kid who played young Spock in the Kelvin Timeline of Star Trek. I thought he was impressive in that short role.

Inside (2007) Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo ![]() As a modern albeit unimaginative reboot on the slasher genre, it succeeds wholesale but as an
example of the much heralded 'new wave of french horror' a la Martyrs and Sheitan,
it falls flat on its eviscerated derriere. Two pregnant mothers at the
wheel collide in a car crash. One baby survives, the other does not (and
why, with a perfectly roadworthy 'significant other' sperm donor passenger on board isn't one of them safely ensconced in the rear seats?) Under normal
circumstances I wouldn't spoil the plot hereabouts but most of you are
smarter than this. Grieving mother Béatrice Dalle seeks to exact revenge by stealing
the unborn child of the other. It's brutal, gory and nasty but almost unremittingly dumb and there are moments when you start to think the premise was as flimsy as: what would Betty Blue (in which Dalle starred) look like if directed by Rob Zombie under excessive product placement demands from the ketchup industry. For those who think lines such as: (La Femme)
Kill me. You already have profound will appreciate the dearth of dialogue and thank the translators for the slow moving subtitles.

Yesterday I saw a really splendid film (for those who like art-house cinema): Drive My Car, by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Based on a story by Haruki Murakami, which I guess contributed to the fact that this film won the prize for script writing at the latest Cannes film festival. (I guess the film is not out yet in most countries, but when you get the chance to see it, don't hesitate to go!) A story about a stage writer/actor, about loss and coping with it, about human relations and about finding one's self... Nothing really sexy when presented like this, but the way it is told, directed and played (no weak actor in this one!) is really a wonderful example of modern filmmaking. The cinematography is at once discreet and terribly to the point. The main titles of the film only appear after 45 minutes and it is indeed then that the real story of the film begins, but those first 45 minutes are already very captivating and intriguing. The three hours that takes the film are completely worth it. A very very great modern film, in my opinion.
