One thing I find a little perplexing is the fact that Japan is in blue and Greece in white. Why is that not the other way around?

Wikipedia: Japan uses blue and white rather than red and white due to a superstition. In its first major international competition, the 1936 Summer Olympics, Japan used a blue kit in the match against Sweden and Japan won the match by a score of 3–2.[8]

Very convincing. No goals but at least Greece got a red card. That should count for something …

They did for a while. But I must admit that the ouzo tasted better than the football tonight. |

Why, because even at 80% fit he showed the England team for what they really are i.e.technique deficient, disorganised, tactically naive and with all the fighting spirit of self-effacing plankton? England were very good against Italy and didn't deserve to lose. Against Uruguay they seemed frightened to take such positivity into this game and ended up getting what they deserved - squat. Notwithstanding the class of Suarez, Uruguay are mediocre at best and that's maybe the most damning indictment of England's performance. |

England were better than Uruguay at everything except the two things that really matter, solid defense and World Class finishing. We dominated possession but couldn't create many clear chances and even then didn't finish them. Uruguay made 3 or 4 chances but clinically finished two of them.
At the end of the day if you only score 1 goal a game at this WC you are going home.

I always admire your honesty but at the risk of being deemed a tad glib, what other things are there in footie apart from 'just the two things' Uruguay bettered England at i.e. attacking and defending? Spain had 57% possession against Holland and lost 5-1 but I fear this stat lost it's trumping mojo a long time ago. (I mean it's like people who talk longest can claim to 'dominate conversation' but actually say f*ck all in terms of content) All games hinge on pivotal moments and I suspect that had Rooney's header not struck the crossbar, England would still be alive in this tournament. But yes I agree, on such fine margins fortunes rest. If it's any consolation, Scotland haven't even had the opportunity to further humiliate ourselves at a higher level since 1982 |

That's pretty weird, and how many red haired indigenous Uruguayans who
actually like tartan hats and would pay good money for the frankly
repugnant new Scotland away kit are there? (The Germans call it Schadenfreude) What a loser, I can boo England from my lounge. (Yes you suck but we Scots suck considerably more, so you're a distant second best even there alas)

Well, I did wish you a happy birthday, so I am not that bad !
I also used a clown emoticon so as not to be perceived as too cynical or naive. I am not a Brit, so being an outsider does not make me guilty of any cynicism , the facts speak for themselves, Gerrard played poorly and Suarez , well.... Edited by tszirmay - June 20 2014 at 10:31 |

So … that means Costa Rica has already won group D, doesn’t it? And Uruguay has to beat Italy in the last match; a draw isn’t good enough.

I think that's it, as well. Not sure what the tie-break rule is, GA or HtH.

Goal average.
Costa Rica hasn't won the group yet. If they lose and one of the other two wins and the goal average is greater, they can still be second. The only truth is that England is out. And that Costa Rica is in.
