For reasons pointed out by Massimo in BWR, I think Finnforest deserve a glass of chilled champagne at the next RPI team meetings in the Collab offices @ PA Plaza. Excellent job, Finnforest and an excellent signing by Massimo & BWR.

I was pretty stoked about how that 3 Monks thing worked out. That band and label were made for each other! |

Esplorare Procession Rock Progressivo Italiano
Review by
Mellotron Storm
Well i took Finnforest's advise and purchased this a couple of months ago.PROCESSION
were a band i fell in love with, well i guess i should say the debut album in particular is what
blew me away although the follow-up was good too.The vocalist Gianfranco Gaza was one
of the few singers who could bring tears to my eyes simply with his voice.Sadly he passed
away in the eighties so he's not on this particular release from 2006.In fact only the guitarist
remains from those seventies albums. The new vocalist does Gianfranco proud though,i'm
very impressed with him.The music here is pretty much all the songs from their two
seventies releases plus a couple of more.Does it work? Well as Jim said "Yep" it sure
does. I do have some issues with it though,in particular the too smooth sounding sax and
flute on the one track but overall i enjoyed this alot.
"C'era Una Volta" is laid back and something you'd hear in a smokey club back in the
day.Piano leads early then the guitar cries out.Flute replaces the guitar before 2 minutes
then it picks up with vocals. Some nice guitar comes and goes.It calms down then we get
sax after 5 1/2 minutes. "Uomini Di Vento" opens with drums and guitar.Organ and flute join
in then vocals. The flute comes and goes. The guitar 2 minutes in sounds great. "Un Mondo
Sprecato" is my favourite and i raise a glass to Gianfranco who may not be singing but his
inspiration can be felt from the new vocalist.Just a gorgeous intro here as reserved
vocals, bass, drums and gentle guitar lead.Gulp.When the tempo picks up check out the
bass ! It settles back as contrasts continue. "Esplorare" opens with bass and vocals.Great
sound 1 1/2 minutes in as guitar and flute stand out.The bass continues to shine.Sax
follows then the vocals replace the sax. "Il Volo Della Paura" is mellow early with acoustic
guitar and flute leading the way.Vocals a minute in.It kicks in after 1 1/2 minutes and the
vocals become more passionate and i love the electric guitar that follows.Beautiful
stuff. "Suite 1" is the other track that is amazing although this is like a medley with one song
blending into the next.Lots of atmosphere early then the guitar comes in after 1 1/2 minutes
and drums and bass follow. An explosive sound then wind can be heard.Cool.Gentle guitar
then vocals follow.Vocals are passionate 3 1/2 minutes in then it kicks into gear.It turns
heavier and more intense 6 minutes in then the tempo picks up.A calm after 9 minutes then
it kicks back in as the tempo and mood continue to change. "Suite 2" turns heavy quickly
and the drumming and synth work are outstanding.A change after 3 minutes as it settles
and we get some vocal melodies too.Another change 6 1/2 minutes in as it turns
aggressive with guitar, organ and drums.Passionate vocals a minute later. "Fiaba" features
gentle guitar as flute joins in followed by drums and vocals. Some chunky bass too.
It is what it is(haha). An album that goes over the same old ground yet at the same time
it "sounds" very good yet is still vintage.A low 4 stars and i'd suggest you check out the
original albums first.

As for the CD due out soon, you can be sure I'll be buying that.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"? |

I have that LP version as it happens and it's on black vinyl. It's not a great pressing to be honest. Mine was a little crackly from 1st play and it's slightly off centre. Not enough to ruin it but a little annoying nevertheless. I'll probably get the Cd version when it appears.

Vault Pick: For those who like a bit of sugar on their RPI....
Review by Andrea Cortese SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Italian Prog Specialist
This is the third album for this contemporary italian band from Sicily. I haven't listened to their previous releases so I cannot offer you a deep analisys or a specific comparison.
Conqueror's new project is very interesting being a complete and mature concept work dedicated to the lucky/unlucky adventure of journalist, TV conductor and famous italian adventurer Ambrogio Fogar and his fellow journalist Mauro Mancini who tried, in 1978, to circumnavigate the Antartic lands with a ship named "Surprise". Unfortunately an orca (a killer whale) caused a shipwreck when they were near the Falkland islands. The two friends went adrift on a small raft for 74 long days. Finally, a boat was sailing around there and rescued them. Unluckily, Mauro Mancini died only two days after for a polmonar didease. This is the fascinating and sad concept upon which all the themes are based. Musically the album appears to be very inspired but its true prog nature is revealed only from the fifth song on, after a long introduction (interesting by the way) made of mainstream melodic pop-prog. Their battle horses are the nice alternating between saxophone and Tullesque flute, the fiery electric guitar' solos as in "L'Ora del Parlare" (5,49 mns), the sparse touches of sixties-like-keyboards as in "Non Maturi per l'Aldilą" (5,46 mns), the exciting changing moods in the elegant melodic structure, the strong interplay between bass, drums and mini-moog as in the beautiful "Nebbia ad Occhi Chiusi" (9,34 mns) or "Cambio di Rotta" (5,11 mns, excellent also for sax). Above all, wonderful female vocals by Simona Rigano. Someone would compare them to the italian seventies band Apoteosi. I disagree, they're less PFM inspired. A vague comparison could be found in other fellow contemporary italian band Aries but not completely being their sound a little bit more varied than that Zuffanti's project. Very good the piano parts and interludes especially when blended with flute and fast drumming as in "Eleutherios" (6,33 mns) or "Master Stefanos" (5,57 mns). I'm not sure but sometimes I've heard some light and mellow mediterranean flavour. I wasn't sure about the final evaluation of this album due to its first part which doesn't describe very well what's going on later. Nothwithstanding this is an album that needs more spins to be completely appreciated. Now I know that many progheads will be pleased! Edited by Nightfly - November 16 2010 at 12:12 |

^ Thanks for reminding me of these guys, Paul. I've got a couple of their albums... not this one though... haven't gotten round to listening to them yet, so will need to rectify that. Great review by Andrea, and an interesting concept.
For those who like a bit of sugar on their RPI.... that'll do for me Tommy! btw, good to see you again Paul... missed you, but I know you've been busy.

Nice of you to say so Chris. I have been around but just not as active as in the past. I'm getting a bit more into the swing of things with the new job so hopefully will get a few reviews done and bio's updated soon.

Don't get to post here often, though I've been reading every post.......thanks for the great recommendations/observations/etc.!
Been listening to the latest La Maschera Di Cera. Someone on here had said a while back that it they didn't like it much, but I have been enjoying it more and more with each listen. Sure, it doesn't compare well to LuxAde, but I think it's quite a nice modern take on classic RPI. I do think adding the electric guitar actually takes away from the music, as one of the things I enjoyed about them was their retro keys dominated sound (and that distorted bass is mostly missing). But overall there are some beautiful melodies and dynamic arrangements and I think it stands up very well on it's own. Anyway, just an RPI album I've been enjoying lately. |

Ah, yes, it was you Andrea! I suppose I could have gone back through to find it was you I was referring to, but I was lazy Yes, I think we agree, as that is basically what I was saying. I'm thinking it will get a 3.5 or so in my review, probably rounded down. I think it's better than 3, but not quite 4. |

^ Yes it will! A quick perusal of my Zune gives me about 50 excellent bands from 1990 on. I won't be able to limit it to five, but I'll put my list together presently.

5 new RPI bands from 1990?
Well this is my list:
1) NUOVA ERA (best record: Il Passo del Soldato, 1995).
2) LA MASCHERA DI CERA (best record: LuxAde, 2006).
3) CONSORZIO ACQUA POTABILE (CAP) (best record: Robin delle Stelle, 1998 - great Banco's influence).
4) IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA (best record: Discesa agl'Inferi d'un Giovane Amante, 2009)
5) LA TORRE DELL'ALCHIMISTA (best record: Neo, 2007).
P.S.: five is too small number...

^ CAP... I've been searching for their Nei Gorghy del Tempo CD. The only one I've seen is a double disc coupled with the live album... $300 on eBay. I don't think so!
Top 5... yep, I'll need to think about this as well...
